03/05/08 - NNHS Newsletter - Uninvited
“I hope, as no unwelcome guest, |
||
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's theme, offered as a
total change of pace, comes as a suggestion
from my
daughter,
Adrienne
Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL) of NC.
We were first introduced to
Alanis Morissette
years ago by
my #4 Son,
Joshua Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL
- '95) of IL, and
found her voice quality and style quite intriguing. This is one of her
songs from 1999.
Thanks,
Adrienne - and Joshua!

If you were looking for a sixties connection, how's this? One of my very favorite movies is a ghost story entitled, The Uninvited (1944) ***. It starred Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and the lovely Gail Russell. Gail Russell, born September 21, 1924, died of a heart attack (induced by alcohol abuse) on August 27, 1961. There ya go.

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."

Classmates":
2.Pam Pennington Cherry ('58) and 3.Clyde Bryant ('58) of PA:
|
I'm aware of several classmates who have recently dealt with health issues and are delighted to now be on the mend. Hope all others are doing well.
1. Pam Pennington
Cherry
developed
an aneurysm from the heart cath required to fix her atrial fib problem.
After another hospital visit, surgery did the trick and she is at home
dong well and expecting to get clearance to drive this week. Pam's email
is still not working, but she enjoys hearing from classmates via phone or
mail:
2. Clyde Bryant
went home about a week after receiving his new heart in December. He had
to get a pacemaker recently and although his rehab continues to go well,
this complicates his plans. He needs to stay close to his cardiac team
and may have to delay some hoped for travel in the next few months. Faye
does not do email and Clyde is limited in strength and energy required, so
please send cards and letters. Faye does enjoy receiving phone calls.
(Phone and address available upon request) |
Thanks, Joe!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 03/03/08 - "90# On Your Telephone":
90# on your telephone
I dialed '0' and asked the operator who confirmed that this was correct so
please pass it on . . . (l also checked out
Snopes.com ..this is true,
and also applies to cell phones!)
PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who
was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete
the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang
up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#,
you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which
enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local
jails/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.
The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with
EVERYONE I KNOW.
After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90#
for anyone !!!!!
http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/jailcall.asp
- Partly True
Thanks, Norris!
![]()
Okay,
Class, as there was no regular homework for today,
your assignment is to read through this selection from Snopes.com, and learn
which part is true, which part is not, and which part is partly true.
And remember - do not dial 90# for anyone!

From Newsmax.com - 03/03/08 - "Potato Is Safest Food on Menu":
Potato Is Safest Food on Menu
A new British study has identified the lowly potato as the safest food on the menu, saying it is the least likely food to cause fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, eczema, and migraine.
The study, which involved giving food intolerance tests to over 8,000 volunteers, found that less than one percent of the participants tested positive for potatoes. “When you consider that each and every person in the UK eats on average 200 lb of potatoes a year, this is really quite surprising,” said study spokesman Les Rowley. “Whereas some food intolerances appear to be caused by too much of the same food, on a too regular basis, it seems that the potato is the exception to the rule.”
Rowley said he believes the potato causes few problems because it breaks down easily in the digestive system, and added that the three foods which most often cause reactions are cow’s milk, yeast, and egg white.

From My Niece, Shari, of VA -
03/03/08 - "You gotta see this one":Dusting (this is apparently not an issue at my house!)
Remember... a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.
"A house becomes a home when you can write 'I love you' on the furniture ..."
I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect - "in case someone came over." Finally I realized one day that no-one came over; they were all out living life and having fun! NOW, when people visit, I don't have to explain the "condition" of my home .. They are more interested in hearing about the things I've been doing while I was away living life and having fun.
If you haven't figured this out yet, please heed this advice.
Life is short. Enjoy it!
Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture or write a letter,
Bake cookies or a cake and lick the spoon or plant a seed,
Ponder the difference between want and need?
Dust if you must, but there's not much
time,
With beer to drink, rivers to swim and mountains to climb,
Music to hear and books to read,
Friends to cherish and life to lead.
Dust if you must, but the world's out
there
With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
Flutter of snow, a shower of rain.
This day will not come around, again.
Dust if you must , but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it's not kind....
And when you go - and go you must -
You, yourself will make more dust!
Share this with all the wonderful friends in your life. I JUST DID.
It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.
Thanks again,
Shari!

From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of
VA - 03/04/08 - "THE BUS RIDE":
Two bowling
teams, one of all Blondes and one of all Brunettes, chartered a double-Decker
bus for a weekend trip to Louisiana.
The Brunette team rode on the bottom of the bus, and the Blonde team rode
on the top level.
The Brunette team down below really whooped it up, having a great time, when one
of them realized she hadn't heard anything from the Blondes upstairs.
She decided to go up and investigate.
When the Brunette reached the top, she found all the Blondes in fear, staring
straight ahead at the road, clutching the seats in front of them with white
knuckles.
The brunette asked, "What the heck's going on up here? We're having a great
time downstairs!"
One of the Blondes looked up at her, swallowed hard and whispered...
"YEAH, BUT YOU'VE GOT A DRIVER!?!"
Thanks, Sarah Sugah!

From F.A.
Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 03/04/08 - "Original Club":
I have an almost complete lack of knowledge of the Peninsula Clubs, F.A. In fact, the only time I ever remember going to any sort of club at all was on Friday, January 27, 1967. I was on a double-date with another couple whom I did not know at all, and after seeing "Alfie" (1966) **** (I believe at the Newmarket Theater), we went to the Officers' Club at Langley Air Force Base (but no, Jimmy-Jimmy, I do not remember what I was wearing).

quite certain that someone else will be able to answer your question, and when
they do, we'll make a brand-new page for it.
Do you recall its
location??
