We were first introduced to Alanis Morissette years ago by

my #4 Son, Joshua Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '95) of IL, and found her voice quality and style quite intriguing. This is one of her songs from 1999.

If you were looking for a sixties connection, how's this? One of my very favorite movies is a ghost story entitled, The Uninvited (1944) ***. It starred Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and the lovely Gail Russell. Gail Russell, born September 21, 1924, died of a heart attack (induced by alcohol abuse) on August 27, 1961. There ya go.

I dialed '0' and asked the operator who confirmed that this was correct so please pass it on . . . (l also checked out Snopes.com ..this is true, and also applies to cell phones!)

PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.

DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!!

We'd moved to St. Louis, but the Veteran's Administration (VA) said if I wanted to stay in queue, I'd better get myself to the appointment I'd made at the VA medical facility in Marion, Indiana. So after working Wednesday, May 30, 2007, I drove the five hours to Marion.

While I sat in the waiting room another man sat down beside me. We started talking. He said he was a Marine. He still looked strong at about 60, had sandy brown hair which was graying, and a quiet voice. His right eye was gone and the face and skull around it were deformed because of an obviously horrible injury. I didn't ask how or what happened because some of us don't like to talk about or remember some things.

What I did ask was if he was in Vietnam. He said he was.

I asked when. He said 18 months in 1967 and 1968. That's when I was there so we began to talk about places and things. He was in recon, which is tough and dangerous work.

We talked about the troops in Iraq and the PTSD they will face. We talked about how loud noises still make us jump after 40 years. Recently in a store someone dropped an empty pallet behind me that hit the concrete floor with a very loud bang. My heart stopped -- as it always does when I hear sounds like that. He nodded agreement.

We discussed a woman's son, back from Iraq for July 4th, 2006. He formerly enjoyed fireworks immensely, but couldn't stand them now. That will be a sad -- and profound -- fact of life for many people returning after service in this war.

I asked if he made it to Danang. He said that's where they took him when he was hit and lost his eye. That was the third time he was wounded so it finally sent him home. I told him I might've carried him off the chopper and taken care of him before his surgery. I was a Navy Corpsman at Danang hospital, in the Receiving Unit.

We ran out to the choppers, took the wounded into our Quonset hut, and tried to save their lives. We stopped bleeding, started IV's, stabilized them enough to give them a chance to live, and prepared them for surgery.

When it was my time to see the doctor, I told him Semper Fi and walked away.

After seeing the doctor I came out and the Marine and I happened to walk along side by side for a minute. He said, "Doc, if you ARE the one who carried me and saved my life... thanks."

I just nodded and our paths parted. I hadn't felt better than that in a long time.

That former Marine said something else very profound during our conversation. "You never know who the drunk sitting at the bar might be, or the homeless guy on the corner. He might have saved your life once."

He was right.

I Would Pick More Daisies

When the late Nadine Stair of Louisville, Kentucky, was 85 years old, she was asked what she would do if she had her life to live over again.

"I'd make more mistakes next time," she said. "I'd relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been on this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones.

Dusting (this is apparently not an issue at my house!)

Remember... a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.

"A house becomes a home when you can write 'I love you' on the furniture ..."

I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect - "in case someone came over." Finally I realized one day that no-one came over; they were all out living life and having fun! NOW, when people visit, I don't have to explain the "condition" of my home .. They are more interested in hearing about the things I've been doing while I was away living life and having fun.

If you haven't figured this out yet, please heed this advice.

Life is short. Enjoy it!

Two bowling teams, one of all Blondes and one of all Brunettes, chartered a double-Decker bus for a weekend trip to Louisiana.

The Brunette team rode on the bottom of the bus, and the Blonde team rode on the top level.

The Brunette team down below really whooped it up, having a great time, when one of them realized she hadn't heard anything from the Blondes upstairs. She decided to go up and investigate.

When the Brunette reached the top, she found all the Blondes in fear, staring straight ahead at the road, clutching the seats in front of them with white knuckles.

The brunette asked, "What the heck's going on up here? We're having a great time downstairs!"

One of the Blondes looked up at her, swallowed hard and whispered...

"YEAH, BUT YOU'VE GOT A DRIVER!?!"

I was wondering if there were any old pictures of the Original Club on the NNHS website. I searched it but didn't see any. I remember going to a lot of dances down there in its hey day, which was in the late 50's and 60's. I also remember singing down there with Wayne Green back in the 70's, but not sure what we were singing for. But I do remember Dick Lamb being there spinning the discs. Anyone know the history behind the Original Club and what ever happened to it?

I have an almost complete lack of knowledge of the Peninsula Clubs, F.A. In fact, the only time I ever remember going to any sort of club at all was on Friday, January 27, 1967. I was on a double-date with another couple whom I did not know at all, and after seeing "Alfie" (1966) **** (I believe at the Newmarket Theater), we went to the Officers' Club at Langley Air Force Base (but no, Jimmy-Jimmy, I do not remember what I was wearing).

But I'm quite certain that someone else will be able to answer your question, and when they do, we'll make a brand-new page for it. Do you recall its location??
