Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today is St. Patrick's Day. You know what that means, don't you?
That's right. It means if you remembered to go outside at dawn or 6:00 AM, whichever
worked best for you, and carefully examined all the patches of moss in your yard
(or preferably, your carefully cultivated moss gardens and moss pots), you
stood an excellent chance of spotting a leprechaun. 
And if you did, he would have granted you three wishes. And that would
have been most lovely. Mind you, I've never managed to find one yet myself, but I remain ever optimistic.

I have some information on some of our old movie theaters. I have come to
own a 1945-1946 Peninsula telephone directory that lists the name and
address for each one.
SUPER-DE-DUPER!!! Congratulations on your treasure! It was interesting to note that there are no drive-in theaters listed. They must have come shortly after this period. There is a cool picture of the old Burkholder dairy milk delivery truck in the yellow pages. |

As a matter of fact, I have recently been given some material which may very
very answer this question, Mike. I hope to be able to process it all

Saw
picture of Janet Hirshman ('68). Only one since I started reading
newsletter that I recognized. I love reading it. Hope she still remembers me from east end. And her brother (Mike Hirshman - '65 - of CO) also, what a thrill.
It was a thrill seeing them both again,
too, Buzzy! They were both so instantly recognizable - which is no
mean accomplishment after 40 years! |

I moved away from the Peninsula in August of 1968, and didn't really return even for touring purposes until October of 2000. So many of my memories are flawed, scrambled, and completely missing, but seeing that interior wall just restored an entire segment of delightful old memories to me. Thanks so very much, John! I haven't yet posted this to the Palace Theater page. Have you any idea when this was?? (Of course it's entirely possible that this is included in some of the recent information which has been supplied to me which also remains unprocessed at the moment......) |

David! These acts were
both incredible to me, and the commentary offered on the second one was
really interesting.
I kept thinking as I
watched Chris Bliss
that he did not move like any juggler I've ever seen before in my life -
and I was raised on weekly sessions of
Ed Sullivan.
His name was unfamiliar to
me, and I kept wondering what his primary occupation must be. Was he a
musician? A choreographer? What else does he do? It seems that he is a
comedian...
The second man moved like a
classical juggler, and was understandably very proud of that fact. He
kept referring to Bliss's "awkward, pained body language" - which I
thought was his interpretation of the music, the juggling being a
delicious secondary treat. And even if they were performing near
identical routines, they still strike me as "apples and oranges"
entertainments, which should not be compared quite so literally, the first
as something truly novel and mesmerizing, the second as an outstanding
achievement.
I found them both quite
fascinating, Thank you so much for sharing them!
 And the more I think of them, the more I prefer Chris Bliss' act. It was weird and unusual. And so am I. |

 First of all, having seen your recent photographs, there is no way I'm ever biting for that "us OLDIES" bit nonsense where you are concerned! Secondly, I love that little verse! Snippets of it run through my mind practically every morning in the five minutes or so I spend still in bed just after I really awake, and it always makes me smile, if I'm not already! (And I firmly believe that everyone should awaken smiling. Otherwise, what's the point?) |
