Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today is St. Patrick's Day. You know what that means, don't you?
That's right. It means if you remembered to go outside at dawn or 6:00 AM, whichever
worked best for you, and carefully examined all the patches of moss in your yard
(or preferably, your carefully cultivated moss gardens and moss pots), you
stood an excellent chance of spotting a leprechaun.
And if you did, he would have granted you three wishes. And that would
have been most lovely. Mind you, I've never managed to find one yet myself, but I remain ever optimistic.

Hi, Mark!
It's so good to hear from you! I added your name to the mailing lists and

I
did not post your email addy, but will if you authorize me to do so.
Send me your birthday, and
I'll post that, too:
I wonder if you've already seen your name mentioned on the pages? Don
Chaney and I both spoke of you here:
And I just changed your status from "MISSING" to "FOUND" here:
Welcome aboard, and I'll see

BIRTHDAYS - BELATED AND OTHERWISE:

From Bob Schweida ('54) of NH - 03/11/06:

MARGARET SCHWEIDA (56), ALSO
JERRY SCHWEIDA (62),

playlists >>
Carol and/or Gloria,
Tell me more about this website and I will see if I can find it for you.
With my study of Vietnam war history, there are not many Nam websites that
I have not visited at least once. Send me the link that you have and
describe the site a little.
Al Simms (60)
Thanks, Al! You probably do have this included in your material somehow. It's simply a link to a cool site called something like Music of the Vietnam War Era. It's the link itself that we've lost. Wait a minute! Stop the train! As it happens, after I had given up completely, I miraculously just found it! It was from
http://chu65nang67.us/nam/vietnam.html There ya go, everyone! Grab it while it's hot!
Thanks again, Al!

From Bob Schweida ('54) of NH - 03/11/06:
| CAROL, I NOTICED THAT THERE IS A VOID FOR BIRTHDAYS IN FEBRUARY. I WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT THAT BY HAVING MY NAME PLACED ON THE EMPTY DATE, 29 FEBRUARY. BOB SCHWEIDA (54) 1936, A YOUNG KID. THANK YOU, BOB SCHWEIDA (54) WOWZERONI!!! You're only 17-1/2 years old! How cool is that?!? I've happily added your name to the Birthday Page: |

From Mike Leonard ('68) of VA - 03/11/06 -
"Movie Theatres":
|
I have some information on some of our old movie theaters. I have come to
own a 1945-1946 Peninsula telephone directory that lists the name and
address for each one.
SUPER-DE-DUPER!!! Congratulations on your treasure! It was interesting to note that there are no drive-in theaters listed. They must have come shortly after this period. There is a cool picture of the old Burkholder dairy milk delivery truck in the yellow pages. |

As a matter of fact, I have recently been given some material which may very
very answer this question, Mike. I hope to be able to process it all
over the weekend. I'll also add your phone listings to the Our Old Movie Theaters page, and create a new page for Burkholder Dairy. I might even have some old images concerning that one myself. Thanks so much, Mike!

If any of you Typhoons, or maybe even a Crabber or two, have anything that they would like for me to look up, I would be glad to do it.
Mike Leonard (68)
Actually, I have something myself. How about the Wythe Bowling
Alley on Kecoughtan Road? I'd like an exact address, because I'm
completely obsessive about such things. Oh, actually, that probably
came later as well. Oh, rats. Well, thanks anyway!

Saw
picture of Janet Hirshman ('68). Only one since I started reading
newsletter that I recognized. I love reading it. Hope she still remembers me from east end. And her brother (Mike Hirshman - '65 - of CO) also, what a thrill.
It was a thrill seeing them both again,
too, Buzzy! They were both so instantly recognizable - which is no
mean accomplishment after 40 years! |

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 03/14/06 - "Juggling Act" AND "Juggling
Act REDUX":
|
This came to me from a friend. I don't think that
"Juggling Act" quite covers it. Judge for yourself.
Dave
I forwarded this to you too soon.
Thank you,
David! These acts were
both incredible to me, and the commentary offered on the second one was
really interesting.
I kept thinking as I
watched Chris Bliss
that he did not move like any juggler I've ever seen before in my life -
and I was raised on weekly sessions of
Ed Sullivan.
His name was unfamiliar to
me, and I kept wondering what his primary occupation must be. Was he a
musician? A choreographer? What else does he do? It seems that he is a
comedian...
The second man moved like a
classical juggler, and was understandably very proud of that fact. He
kept referring to Bliss's "awkward, pained body language" - which I
thought was his interpretation of the music, the juggling being a
delicious secondary treat. And even if they were performing near
identical routines, they still strike me as "apples and oranges"
entertainments, which should not be compared quite so literally, the first
as something truly novel and mesmerizing, the second as an outstanding
achievement.
I found them both quite
fascinating, Thank you so much for sharing them!
And the more I think of them, the more I prefer Chris Bliss' act. It was weird and unusual. And so am I. |

mind, Eric, but don't ever tell me how you do that. I prefer to think
you have a resident leprechaun of your own who helps you in these matters.

Evelyn, you are such a sweetie-pie!
First of all, having seen your recent photographs, there is no way I'm ever biting for that "us OLDIES" bit nonsense where you are concerned! Secondly, I love that little verse! Snippets of it run through my mind practically every morning in the five minutes or so I spend still in bed just after I really awake, and it always makes me smile, if I'm not already! (And I firmly believe that everyone should awaken smiling. Otherwise, what's the point?) |
||
By the way, when I was three years old and had what they used to call German measles and was lying quite ill in my little bed, my daddy (who spoiled me way beyond all reason) brought me home a squeaky Tweety Bird toy - which I loved intensely. It's a little known fact that shortly thereafter, I determined to marry my beloved Tweety Bird, but somehow, my plans were altered in the intervening years: http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/cluckmeat/me.html Thanks, Lady!

Danny Boy
Words by
Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929);
Music: The Londonderry Air
History: http://www.standingstones.com/dannyboy.html
Oh Danny boy,
the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
