   We have still more sad news today. 

  From Fred Mays ('60) of VA - 04/03/06 - "Another death to report":

Carol:

I just wanted to report another death of a relative of mine, a (first cousin, once removed)... William Douglas Burns, class of 1962. To family, he was known as Doug; however, I noticed in the yearbook it says, "William". He passed away late this morning, 04/03/06. He had an aneurysm several days ago and this resulted in a stroke on one side and then another on the other side. Doug was one of five children born to my first cousin, Susie Coleman Burns (Feb., 1940). All of Susie's siblings graduated from N.N.H.S. as did all the Burns kids. Doug's siblings are    Alton in '60,    Marie (Wurtz) in '64,    Mike in '65, and    Carolyn Sue (Cunningham) in '66.

I do not have funeral details at this point. Doug's wife is Gale Burns, 151 North Bermuda Run Drive, Advance, N.C. 27006-8514. I understand Advance is outside of Winston Salem, N.C. I do not know the newspaper there...probably the Winston Salem one, however. My cousin, Virginia Coleman Abbott of Richmond, said there will be a private family graveside, I think she said on Friday and then a memorial service after this, the same day...it may be on Thursday.

   Thank you so much for telling us, Fred.  I didn't know Alton, but I did know William and all of his younger siblings.  I am so sorry to learn of his untimely death.  Our sincerest sympathies are extended to you and all of William's family and friends.

ADVANCE, N.C. - Mr. William Douglas Burns, 62, passed away Monday, April 3, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 14, 1943, in Newport News, Va. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1967 and worked as a Merchant Marine Engineer with Humble Oil Company. He entered the computer field at Computer Sciences Corp. in Huntsville, Ala., and in 1972 he came to Winston-Salem to work for Arista Information Systems. He formed the Operational Excellence Forum and for many years he has worked with the Oliver Wight Companies as an educator and consultant in manufacturing systems. He is survived by his wife, Gale; two daughters, Corinne and Stephanie; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Carolyn and Frank Cunningham, Marie and Richard Wurtz, Alton and Neeltje Burns, Sheila and Mike Burns; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, 108 E. Kinderton Way, Advance, N.C., with the Rev. Ramon E. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 202 CentrePort Drive, Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409. The family would like to express their gratitude for all the prayers and support during this past week.

Offering my deepest condolences during this difficult time. I am terribly sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a husband, son, father, brother or uncle can be overwhelming. Therefore, how comforting it is to know that God is there for us. And at Psalms chapter eighty-nine verse twenty-six it tells us that God is our Father and the Rock of our salvation.

..... The Memorial Service for my cousin Doug will be held on Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Hayworth-Miller-Kinderton Funeral Home in Advance, NC.  It will be followed by a family visitation.......

I was so sorry to read Fred Mays' ('60 - of VA) note of the death of Doug Burns.  They were active members of Noland Memorial United Methodist Church and neighborhood friends for a number of years.  Being friends with Marie, I couldn't help but be aware of the fact she had 3 very nice looking brothers.  I never saw Doug without a smile.  My Deepest Sympathy to all of the Burns from both sides of 53rd Street.  You are in my thoughts and Prayers.

Just as a note of interest, Susie Coleman Burns, the mother of William Burns, graduated from NNHS with me, in the class of February l940.

I was greatly saddened when Susie passed away, and it hurts to realize that this is her son, who has now also passed away.
