04/11/05 - NNHS Newsletter - Blue Moon

  

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   


   I promised to keep you aware of Miles Nowitzky's (Granby HS - '50 - of NC) (my brother-in-law) condition.  Miles was doing
well on Thursday, though his progress seemed to be slower than expected.  At 5:00 AM on Friday, however, the hospital called
Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59) and told her to come right away.  He had gone into cardiac arrest, and had to be taken back
into surgery.  (She told me this at 8:30, which pretty much accounts for the fact that I failed to put out Friday's Newsletter - not that
I ever freak out or anything...)

   He had developed a slow leak behind the bypass behind the heart, and blood had built up in the sac surrounding his heart.  As
it turned out, he had two bouts of cardiac arrest, but he did not suffer a heart attack.

   The good news is, that following that second surgery, his vitals are better than they were before.  His kidneys are still not working, and he's continuing to receive dialysis, but there was no damage sustained to the liver, which is excellent news.  His color is back,
he's wiggling his toes, he's alert - and his wondrous sense of humor is doing just fine.  We stopped by to see him briefly late last
night, and found him much improved.

   Eleanor asked me to thank you all for your continued prayers.  Y'all are the best!

THANK YOU, LOYAL TYPHOONS:

After my last report (20 March) of CD set orders (93) and voluntary contributions ($880) to the Class
of 1964 Treasury, I was deluged with new orders, which have now all been filled.  The totals are now
110 sets and $1025.  It has been fun keeping Cookie (Phillips Tyndall - '64 - of VA) busy depositing
checks.

If you are still one of those lovers of Good Ol' Rock & Roll who has not yet placed an order, it is never
too late. I have about 180 blank CDs on the shelf, so help me get rid of them. Just send me an e-mail

   WOWZERS, Dave!  That's wonderful!  It's nice for your treasury, of course, but super-wonderful for those fortunate souls now in possession of those fabulous CDs!

   I just can't imagine anyone not wanting these CDs!  The music itself is marvelous, but to have it interspersed from time
to time with old sound bites from WGH - well, that's simply an unforgettable, priceless exercise in time travel!

Carol, all those pictures of the reunion are wonderful!  Until this issue, I only knew Dave Arnold ('65 - of VA) (from 24th
Street Church of Christ).  But there's Dale Mueller ('64 - of VA)!  And I'm racking my teeny-tiny lil' brain trying to figure
out how I know him.  He either went to my church or.......did he possibly attend a Hampton school?  Oh my, was that a GASP! 
from all the Typhoons?  :)

   GASP!!!  Oh, my, yes, Gloria - what you said!!! 

   I couldn't answer that for you, Gloria.  According to my contemporary records (which may or may not be accurate), Dale was raised as a Baptist.  Of course, I knew a great many young people who managed somehow for various reasons to attend two churches simultaneously.

   But Dale Mueller a CRABBER?!?  NE-VAH!  As his sister, Shirley ('60), before him, Dale was strictly a TYPHOON!  From the time he quarterbacked the NNHS Football team as a sophomore to when he was voted Best Looking in his Senior Class of 1964, Dale wore the BLUE and GOLD.  As you can see, he's still absolutely gorgeous.
 

   So I just don't know how you
knew him.   Perhaps you met
him on a double date.

   Of course, he is on our
mailing list.  I suppose we
could just cut to the chase
and ask him if he remembers. 

   Oh, Da-le!!!!

First, in reply to Dave's (Spriggs - '64 - of VA) inquiry, although it may seem that I have been around "forever" my days as a
basketball player do no go back as far as "jump balls" after every basket! Regarding the term basket and basketball, "in the
beginning...", there were indeed peach baskets used as "goals" and after each made goal a ladder was brought forth
to remove the ball from the basket, AND INDEED A "JUMP BALL" WAS "HELD" AFTER EACH BASKET!!
THEREFORE, DAVE IS CORRECT, AS USUAL!!
 
As an aside, does anyone remember how "girl's, women's" basketball was played? How many players were on the floor and
where they were placed? Of course, this question regards how it was played before it became the "same" as the men's game.
 
Now to Albert (Dorner - '66- of VA) and his unfair advantage he is using against my rapidly failing memory - JUST KIDDING
ABOUT UNFAIR - indeed he is CORRECT about the "Home Court Winning Streak" ending a 100. For years I had believed it
was 101! Now, I know better, THANKS, for real, Albert!!
 
As to the "Peninsula District", we are as close to bantering about semantics as we could be! Although, I have few newspaper
articles from my senior year, the few I have refer to the "Peninsula Standings" when they are listed. Prior to that year, it was
"Eastern District Standings", when printed. Additionally, my "certificate of participation" for that year states "Peninsula
Champions".
 
However, in all honesty, one article mentions:"...the Peninsula DIVISION of the Eastern District". It could be that 64-65 was the transition year from complete association with the Eastern District to the Peninsula District (Peninsula Division) and the two descriptions were used as one (District and Division). Although I can't put my hands on it, I do recall in an article the mention of the "three Districts: Eastern, Southeastern, and Peninsula"!. Could be the writers were as confused as we were!
 
Enough from me on this subject and any other for that matter!!

Hello Fred
 
It's April and the cherry trees are in full bloom at the nation's capitol.
 
I have a pretty clear memory of my parents taking me to Washington to see the Japanese cherry blossoms (as they were called then).  This was in April 1933.  I was 5 years old, about to turn 6 in June.
 
We went on the steamboat from Old Point Comfort.  The first excitement was seeing the boat arrive
from Norfolk.  It didn't remain at the pier very long and we had to hustle to get settled on board.  I can remember waving goodbye to my grandparents who were standing on the pier watching the boat depart.
 
There was some kind of entertainment that evening -- a small band I think.  I suddenly had an urgent need so my busy parents gave me the key to the stateroom.  I went alone to our stateroom which was
on the next deck down.  On the way back I forgot to go up to the next deck and got lost.  I didn't want
the embarrassment of telling anyone, so I just kept walking around trying very hard not to look lost.  Fortunately the music started up again and I followed it on up one deck and got reunited.  My parents had not even missed me and for certain I didn't tell them about getting lost.
 
Imagine giving a 5 year old kid permission to do that in today's world.  My 12-year old granddaughter is not even allowed to go out of the house alone.
 
I remember the Zoo, the Smithsonian (with a large model of Lindbergh's plane hung up on wires), and huffing and puffing to the top of the stairs in the Washington monument.  And of course, going to see the cherry blossoms.
 
We stayed at someone's home that night.  Never knew who they were.  I had to sleep on the floor.  The next evening at dusk we got on the steamboat for the journey home.  As we passed Mount Vernon the ship's searchlight was turned on.  Since Mount Vernon is white, it made quite a spectacle.  I remembered the story about George Washington chopping down the cherry tree and I tried to see if there were any left.  Someone told me that they all had been moved to Washington.  In those days a timely answer was much better than a plain old truth.
 
The next morning the steamboat arrived back at Old Point.  We had to get off in a hurry because the boat had to continue on to Norfolk.
 
Other kids bragged about taking the train to Richmond (which  I didn't get to do until 1945).  But I had something better to tell:  I had been to Washington on the steamboat!  When anyone would listen they got the full details.

Carol,

I love your "songs" theme for the newsletters. I actually remember something related to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."  In gym class, we used to do jump rope (yes, we jumped rope) routines to this song. It was fun!

I am amazed at the detail with which some of the people who write mails remember events. I feel as if I am constantly filling in details in my life that I must have missed . . . somewhere. I appreciate these people taking the time to write in such detail.

   Thank you, Cousin Pam!  It goes without saying how much I love these songs and the great MIDI files that Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA)  finds for us.  I say it all the time anyway!  GIGGLES!!!

   I really appreciate the detail being given myself.  I know it may seem tedious to some, but so many of my memories are fractured, I find it very helpful in reconstructing them when I have more information.

   For instance, I remember having to jump rope in eighth grade, but I did not remember the music.  That's probably because
I was horrified that at long last I was actually going to have to learn to jump rope, having adroitly avoided it all through childhood.

   I vividly recall Nancy Lewis ('65) saying as I balked, "C'mon, Carol - just like we used to do at Magruder."

   "Remember, Nancy?" I replied.  "I'm the one who always volunteered to turn the rope.  I never actually took a turn jumping."

   All those years they thought I was being nice, I was primarily seeking to avoid the humiliation of exposing my total lack
of coordination.  Sigh.

   I was later somewhat vindicated by being one of the few girls in the class who could turn a perfect cartwheel.  I ended
up teaching some of the others.  It was one of my finer moments.  They came so rarely to me in P.E.

Carol,
I have been reading, with great interest, the articles on "The Boys Club." I have a few memories myself and
I thought I would share them. You could join the club when you were six years old, which I did in 1956. At that time they were building the new club on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Hilton Boulevard and were using the white building next door on Hilton Boulevard until it was complete. I was a member every year until I became too old in 1968.

I remember Harry Shoff was the director, but he left and Thomas Olaisen, MR. TOM as we called him, took over. There was also a Mr. Beales who was program director in the early 1960s. What stood out
about him was he drove a 1955 Chevy. It had straight shift on the column and he only had one arm. But boy, could he speed shift that thing. He could also play me a mean game of table tennis. I carried The Times Herald newspaper in Briarfield Manor from 1962 until 1965 and then the Boys Club hired me to work the Craft Room for a whopping 50 cents an hour. It was my first job that required a Social Security Card. I remember going
to the Social Security office on Marshall Ave. It was on the side of the bank building, maybe First and Merchants? Another thing that I remember, was that in 1964 they organized several bus trips to the World's Fair in New York. My first trip to the Big City, and first away from home without Mom And Pop. It was
G-R-E-A-T. I have a picture of that around here somewhere and will forward a copy when I locate it. In the meantime, here's a copy of one of my old club cards. Keep up the Great Work......Until next time.
