Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's Newsletter's theme song was suggested
by
Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI on 04/13/05:
You have a magic shower that sings you songs...I have
pieces of songs running around in my brain every now and then...this
drives me crazy until I can identify the title, the singer, the year,
etc. They are usually from the '60s of course and even though all the
algebra and chemistry and most of the history have over the years pretty
much left my brain...for some reason these songs remain! So I was
thinking of this piece of a song..."Sweet Sue was a havin' fits...if you
don't give me the deed to your land I'll blow you all to bits"..."and
then...he grabbed her...and then...he tied her up...and then...along came
Jones" (I thought it was along came John)...well thanks be to
Google...we
found the song and we even were able to purchase a CD (it was sung by the
Coasters who also sang "Charlie Brown" and a few other hits...and were
able to purchase it on E-bay! Now I can sleep at night...until the next
piece of a song starts to haunt me!
Thanks, Jean!
"...A train started comin'..."

Hi, Carol:
Probably most of your
Newsletter
subscribers are aware of these two guys who give advise about automobiles.
They air on most National Public Radio stations on Saturday mornings, and
provide some humorous relief on some serious subjects. Their laughter
makes it worthwhile to tune them in, and they are both graduates of MIT.
Here is the link to their website for those who like
to use the internet.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
I love that show! I
had no idea that they held degrees from MIT, but it's an entertaining and
informative program. Thanks for the link!
Joe, I know you must
think I abuse you. You send me things and then I take forever and a day to
post them, seemingly without reason. This one certainly appeared to be
easy, but I was having a difficult time determining just where on that
rather strangely constructed page I wanted to place
the link. |

Moreover, I had just decided that I wanted to place this glorious vintage
image of
Chip Clark's ('65 - of Northern VA)
in the title of the page, as what else on earth could better represent that
theme? And the page needed more color, and a little better arrangement in some areas, and all that took some "mulling time", so I postponed the whole thing until Tuesday morning, when it all jelled in my mind. |

Jimmy, thank you so much for this very moving presentation. A few weeks ago, before
she had ever joined us "officially",
I still feel that thrill whenever I go out and see men and women in uniform - which happens whenever I leave home. Fayetteville is home not only to the Army's Ft. Bragg, but to Pope Air Force Base. Helicopters fly over our home several times a day. In fact, there's one passing over right now. As often as I'm able, I still run outside in the yard and stand on my tippy toes and wave to them. Chances are excellent that with the seven giant Ponderosa pine trees in the front yard, they do not see me. That's not the point. I wave to them anyway, just as I always have, just as I always will. Many of our dearest friends have served In "lands dark and dusty", as one of them styled it - not once but repeatedly. At any given time we know more than a small handful of people in harm's way. We kiss them goodbye as they leave, and hug them home again when they return. My heart is ever with them. And that's why I so
appreciate this presentation. Thanks, Sweetie!

Also, Allen West, who grew up down the street from me has a daughter getting married also. Allen was the youngest of three children. Oops, I recall that his mother has another child much later...I think I am correct. He and his brother Howard, class of 1961 and his sister Catherine, class of 1959 all were neighbors and friends of all who knew them. Thank you again, Fred! I didn't seem to know any of them, but there was an Allen West in the Class of 1968. I did know a Kenny West in the Class of 1965, but could not find a yearbook picture of him beyond our sophomore year. |

Hello Carol, Tue. Apr. 18, 06 copy to Beth Maxwell

Maybe Daniel Boone quoting Carol Harty??
I believe you have something
there, Fred!

I have often wondered when and why the NN Times-Herald
vanished.
The answer appeared in today's Daily Press:
The end of the Times-Herald
Published April 18 2006
Q: When and why did the Daily Press stop publishing
the afternoon edition, the Times-Herald?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Thank you for sharing
that, Fred. I would not have spotted it, and I too have puzzled over
that.
Any visibility on publishing The Special from the CD?
Nostalgic best wishes, Fred
I hope to be able to include that very soon now, Fred. I apologize for the delay. |

Ahhh, I see we have another mind reader among us! Thank you, John! Your timing is perfect! Monday was probably one of the most unpleasant, painful, stressful days I have yet endured - or certainly within the last five years. It was further exacerbated by a violent thunderstorm which sounded as if the roof was going to collapse, and which relieved us of our electricity from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. When I awoke Tuesday morning, my face and eyes were yet swollen from the "delights" of the day. As if in compensation for it all (or in obedience to the Equal Time Principle of the Universe), the day turned into a very charming, pleasant one - a mini-vacation from everything, capped by unexpected company in the evening. TCM was showing a great old WWII movie (my favorite kind!) in the afternoon, which inexplicably none of us had ever seen - Air Force (1943). While I watched, I crocheted a major yarn project I need to finish as a gift. Shortly after the movie's conclusion, the internet, TV, and phone all went down for probably 90 minutes. By then I wanted to watch another WWII film (and keep crocheting), so I scrounged my DVD collection for one I hadn't seen lately. The first one I found was Destination Tokyo (1944). I flipped over the box and read, "What the WWII-era film Air Force is to the skies, Destination Tokyo is to the seas." - which I found deliciously ironic.
My
daddy And all that brought me
back full circle to
Thank you once more, Gentlemen!

Along Came Jones
(The Coasters)
I plopped down in my easy chair
and turned on Channel 2
A bad gunslinger called Salty Sam was chasin' poor Sweet Sue
He trapped her in the old sawmill and said with an evil laugh,
"If you don't give me the deed to your ranch
I'll saw you all in half!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He turned on the bandsaw (and then, and then...!)
[Chorus:]
And then along came Jones
Tall thin Jones
Slow-walkin' Jones
Slow-talkin' Jones
Along came long, lean, lanky Jones
Commercial came on, so I got up to get myself a snack
You should've seen what was goin' on by the time that I got back
Down in the old abandoned mine, Sweet Sue was havin' fits
That villain said, "Give me the deed to your ranch
Or I'll blow you all to bits!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He lit the fuse to the dynamite (and then, and then...!)
[Chorus]
I got so bugged I turned it off and turned on another show
But there was the same old shoot-'em-up and the same old rodeo
Salty Sam was tryin' to stuff Sweet Sue in a burlap sack
He said, "If you don't give me the deed to your ranch
I'm gonna throw you on the railroad tracks!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He threw her on the railroad tracks (and then)
A train started comin' (and then, and then...!)
