Dear
Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's Newsletter's theme was prompted by
Robert Price ('61) of VA. At the close of the last
Newsletter - 04/26/08 - Four Walls,
he quoted the poignant lyrics of Reba McEntire's song, "If I Had Only
Known":
I thought it would make an excellent Newsletter theme, but even though I found this YouTube video, I sadly was unable to find a corresponding .mid file for it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeKv_qc_aOo - If I Had Only Known
I will have to assume that no one has yet sequenced it into a midi - which is the only way I can attach it to a page.
However, an old thought came into my mind.
My parents owned a copy of this book: The Oxford Book of English Verse: 1250–1900, Arthur Quiller-Couch, ed. 1919 One of its many treasures was a poem by Irish poet Charles Wolfe, entitled "To Mary". I can't recall how it happened, but when I was in high school, I somehow discovered that those words could be sung to the strains of "Greensleeves" - and I performed it publicly on at least two occasions. Remarkably, I still remember all four verses of Wolfe's poem which I memorized those long years ago. In lieu of my original choice, I thought I'd share this combination with you instead.

Robert Price ('61) of VA
with reference to the late
Russell Maynard ('61) and the
lyrics of the song "If I Had Only Known" which he shared with us, it prompted
me to check out iTunes to see if the version by Reba McEntire (that is
the way it is spelled...learned the hard way) was available.As you see, Joe, we were thinking alike on this one; sorry it didn't work out as we would have liked.
And, oh,
I don't know nuffin 'bout no iPods!
I don't even have a cell phone!
Thanks, Adonis!

From Betty Spain Uecker ('63) of
VA - 04/23/08 - "BEING A MOTHER":
WHAT A STORY! TIME IS ALL WE REALLY HAVE TO GIVE TO ONE ANOTHER..
BETTY
|
BEING A MOTHER After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, 'I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.' The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. 'What's wrong, are you well,' she asked? My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. 'I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,' I responded 'just the two of us.' She thought about it for a moment, and then said, 'I would like that very much.' That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's. 'I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed,' she said, as she got into the car. 'They can't wait to hear about our meeting.' We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half-way through the entrees, I lifted my eyes and saw Mother sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. 'It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,' she said. 'Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor,' I responded. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said , 'I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.' I agreed. 'How was your dinner date?' asked my wife when I got home. 'Very nice, much more so than I could have imagined,' I answered. A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her. Sometime later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place Mother and I had dined. An attached note said: 'I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but, nevertheless, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son' At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: 'I love YOU' and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some 'other' time. Somebody said it takes about six weeks to get back to normal after you've had a baby... somebody doesn't know that once you're a mother, 'normal' is history. Somebody said you can't love the second child as much as you love the first... somebody doesn't have two or more children. Somebody said the hardest part of being a mother is labor and delivery....somebody never watched her 'baby' get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten... or on a plane headed for military 'boot camp.' Somebody said a Mother can stop worrying after her child gets married... somebody doesn't know that marriage adds a new son or daughter-in-law to a mother's heartstrings. Somebody said a mother's job is done when her last child leaves home... somebody never had grandchildren. Somebody said your mother knows you love her, so you don't need to tell her... somebody isn't a mother. This isn't just about being a mother; it's about appreciating the people in your lives while you have them... no matter who that person is! Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes... your destiny. 'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle'. |
Thanks so much, Betty!

Carol,
I had a good friend send me this and I found it very profound. This is something all should see and think about.
Jerry Blanchard (Class of 62) of Va.
In July 2006, a short 3-minute movie was launched on the Internet called The Dash. Since then, over 40 million people from around the world have watched it; and over 20,000 a day continue to watch it as a result of people passing it along.
Thanks, Sweetie!
This
is another item we run rather often, just because we all need to be reminded of
these things on a regular basis!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 04/26/08 - "Thomas Downs":
Hi, Carol:
While transplanting the rose bushes in my yard yesterday, the name Thomas Downs flashed through my old brain for no reason. Then it seemed almost impossible to get him out of my thoughts. Maybe I was having a sun stroke, but my brain would not leave the image I had of this young man when we were students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Now I wonder what path he took in life. Would you mind asking the “Typhoon Nation” if anyone knows his whereabouts and where his life journey has taken him?
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan (’57) of FL
Thanks,
Joe!
It's strange, isn't it, how
names and faces from the past will sometimes suddenly invade our memories with
such force?
How about it, Sweetie-Pies? Does anyone know anything at all about Thomas Downs??

suggestions or to share your memories, images, or other memorabilia with us. Thanks!

To Mary
Lyrics by Charles Wolfe, 1825
(14 Dec 1791 – 21 Feb 1823)
Music -
Greensleeves - a traditional English ballad. There is an (unlikely) legend that
King Henry VIII wrote the tune.
If I had thought thou couldst have died,
I might not weep for thee;
But I forgot, when by thy side,
That thou couldst mortal be:
It never through my mind had past
The time would e'er be o'er,
And I on thee should look my last,
And thou shouldst smile no more!
And still upon that face I look,
And think 'twill smile again;
And still the thought I will not brook,
That I must look in vain.
But when I speak—thou dost not say
What thou ne'er left'st unsaid;
And now I feel, as well I may,
Sweet Mary, thou art dead!
If thou wouldst stay, e'en as thou art,
All cold and all serene—
I still might press thy silent heart,
And where thy smiles have been.
While e'en thy chill, bleak corpse I have,
Thou seemest still mine own;
But there—I lay thee in thy grave,
And I am now alone!
I do not think, where'er thou art,
Thou hast forgotten me;
And I, perhaps, may soothe this heart
In thinking too of thee:
Yet there was round thee such a dawn
Of light ne'er seen before,
As fancy never could have drawn,
And never can restore!
