LAUGH A LITTLE EVERY DAY... |
SPECIAL POEM FOR SENIORS
A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know...
Is what tells each one where to go!
There's always a lot to be thankful for if
you take time to look for it.
For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't
hurt...
Thanks
for the 'toons and the laughs, Janice!

From
Wayne
Stokes ('65) of VA -
04/28/08 - "Hit it right on the Head!!!":
From
Chandler (Nelms - Hampton HS -
'63 - of MD) to me to you!
I'll add to it that, if you think about it, most all of this has come into being
within OUR lifetime!! Sad, fails to describe the state within which we now find
ourselves! I'm going to suggest to the Smithsonian that they create a museum to
those things that are truly becoming an endangered species: MADE IN AMERICA!
AIN'T IT THE TRUTH!!?
Joe Smith started the day early having set his
alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was
perking coffee (GROWN IN COLUMBIA), he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN
HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN
SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his
new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN
MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN
TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) filled
it with GAS (FROM SAUDI ARABIA) and continued his search for a good paying
AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking
his Computer (MADE IN MALAYSIA), Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his
sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and
turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good
paying job in America.
I'm amazed
that Joe Smith was able to find
ANYTHING which didn't say, "MADE IN CHINA"!
Thanks, Wayne Honey -
and Chandler Darlin'!

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 04/28/08 - "Who is your
Susie?":
Who is Your Susie?
WET PANTS
Come with me to a third grade classroom..... There is a nine-year-old kid
sitting at his desk and all of a sudden, there is a puddle between his feet and
the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he
cannot possibly imagine how this has happened.? It's never happened before, and
he knows that when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the
girls find out, they'll never speak to him again as long as he lives.
The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and prays
this prayer, 'Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from
now I'm dead meat.'
He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes
that says he has been discovered.
As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a
goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and
inexplicably dumps the bowl of water in the boy's lap.
The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, 'Thank
you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!'
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the
object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym shorts
to put on while his pants dry out. All the other children are on their hands and
knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would
have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone
else - Susie.
She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. You've done enough, you klutz!'
Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks
over to Susie and whispers, 'You did that on purpose, didn't you?' Susie
whispers back, 'I wet my pants once, too.'
May God help us see the opportunities that are always
around us to do good..
Remember.....Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than
standing in your garage makes you a car.
Each and everyone one of us is going through tough times right now, but God is
getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can. Keep the faith.
Joyce
Cahoon
Thanks so much, Joyce!

From an Anonymous Reader - 04/28/08 - "Old Age":
Old Age, I decided, is a gift.
I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always
wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles,
the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old
person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't
agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family
for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to
myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.
I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed,
or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so
avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be
extravagant..
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they
understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM
and sleep until noon ?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 & 70's, and if I,
at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body,
and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying
glances from the jet set.
They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well
forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break
when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's
beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and
understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and
will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to
have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So
many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn
silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other
people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to
be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the
person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still
here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about
what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. (If I feel like it)
MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE
HEART!
MAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE A RAINBOW OF SMILES ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART FOREVER
AND EVER!
Thank you so much!
I don't know whether I am too
young or too old or too vain or too stubborn or too immature, or a combination
of all of those, but I personally haven't quite arrived at this stage of my
philosophy yet. Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not even close - but there's
always hope!

Bio of Bucky Keller
Newport News native Bucky Keller was a star basketball player at Newport
News High School, where he led the Typhoons to three consecutive state
championships from 1956 to 1958. He was named the state's High School
Basketball Player of the Year three times. When Keller graduated, he was
the second leading career scorer among Group AAA players in Virginia.
Bill Chambers was the head coach at NNHS in 1956 & 1957. Lefty Driesell
was the head coach in 1958.
He was also a star quarterback and All-State football player.
Upon graduation from high school, Keller played for Virginia Tech
basketball, which posted an overall record of 54 wins and 19 losses; it
was one of the most successful eras in Hokie basketball. As a 6'-3", 180
pound swingman, he finished his career with an overall scoring average of
18.2 per game. Keller averaged 7.7 rebounds per game in his career. He
became co-captain of the team his senior year. Keller had a knack for
drawing fouls. He converted 169 free throws his senior year, the third
highest total ever for a Hokie.
Keller scored a career high 31 points in an 87-81 home court upset over
Wake Forest, a national power at the time with Len Chappell and Billy
Packer in the lineup. Throwing 10-foot jumpers and driving down the
middle, he scored 21 points in the second half as Tech held off the
rallying Deacons. Under Coach Chuck Noe, Tech's season came to a
disappointing end when West Virginia defeated the Hokies 88-72 in the
Southern Conference Tournament finals. Keller was held to seven points.
West Virginia Coach George King said, "Stopping Bucky was the big thing.
He's a great player."
In 1962, he was drafted in the sixth round by the NBA Los Angeles Lakers,
but declined the offer.

From Karen Weinstein Witte ('60) of FL -
04/28/08 - "
Sock Hop":
Raoul (Weinstein - '57 - of FL) was the DJ, of course,
playing many of his own old 50's records. During the evening, he was
presented with an award in recognition of holding these Sock Hops for 22
years! Profits from the event go to several local children's projects.
Raoul was true to his word of buying drinks for any Typhooner who showed
up. He actually treated me to a glass of wine and a root beer float!
Thanks, Karen -
and CONGRATULATIONS, Raoul!

From Joan
Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 04/28/08 - "A Can of Worms":
Enjoy. :)
A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.
Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.
The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol - Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke – Dead.
The third worm in chocolate syrup – Dead.
The fourth worm in good clean soil - Alive.
So the Minister asked the congregation - What can you learn from this demonstration?
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,
"As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"
That pretty much ended the service.
Thanks, Joan!

Bye bye, love, bye bye, happiness
Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry
Bye bye, love, bye bye, sweet caress
Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love, good-bye
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby till he stepped in
Good-bye to romance that might have been
Bye bye, love, bye bye, happiness
Hello loneliness, I think I'm gonna cry
Bye bye, love, bye bye, sweet caress
Hello emptiness, I feel like I could die
Bye bye, my love, good-bye
I'm through with romance, I'm through with love
I'm through with countin' the stars above
And here's the reason that I'm so free
My loving baby is through with me
