WORLD WAR 2 PICTURES

These photos were taken in Germany by James Emison Chanslor, an Army Master Sergeant who served in World War II from 1942 until 1945.

It is a matter of history that when Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps, he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

 He did this because he said in words to this effect: 'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the track of history some b *stard will get up and say that this never happened.'

This week, the UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population
which claims it never occurred.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The above sentence is not really correct, but it does nothing to negate the reality
of the horror of these images, or the fact that there are those who make such obscene claims:

This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving in to it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

This ..... is ..... in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian peoples looking the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,'
it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

.....remember, because we cannot let it ever happen again.

   On a personal note,  ..... I have every reason to believe that as the Regimental Surgeon for the 116th Infantry of the 29th Division,       my daddy, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) was present at the liberation of at least one of the infamous Nazi concentration camps.  He would never actually admit it, but he was in the right place at the right time, and it would stand to reason that he should have been there.  Moreover, on more than one occasion he related in great detail a delousing scene of woman prisoners (he called them "refugees") which I later viewed in a documentary exactly as he had described.  Most telling to me, however, was the way he never missed an opportunity to show me, a young child, very graphic images of the camps as they appeared in magazines and on television.  Considering the great care he had taken to protect me from other evils of the world, his heroic efforts that I should never forget speak volumes to me, even today.

   Thank you, Daddy.

For new VA-O and other GWRRA members and all my friends, Chelsea is a VA-O Honorary Member.  In 2003, Joe, Ed Harrah and Don Smith and I met her and her dad, Mark Cook, a NN Policeman, at the Denbigh Day Parade when she was 11. She came over and wanted to "see" the motorcycles, and Joe put her on his bike and then put on my helmet and she thought this was great.  For several years she has attended our meetings selling Girl Scout Cookies and/or items for her school.  The following year she was able to ride in the Smithfield Christmas Parade with Joe and Mark, and I walked holding the VA-O Sign.  After lunch that day, she also rode all the way back home to Newport News with Joe. After that she fell in LOVE with our bikes and told her dad that afternoon that when she married, her husband would have to own a GOLDWING!

Chelsea in now 16 and attending The Aviation Academy which works with Denbigh High School students. (For ones who are not familiar with this school, the Academy is a specialized four-year program to prepare highly motivated and successful high school students for a rewarding and well paying career in engineering technology with an emphasis on aviation and computers.  The standards are high at the Aviation Academy, and every effort is made to provide a caring, disciplined environment where students are given the opportunity to excel and reach their goal with minimal classroom disruptions. The technology courses provide challenging subject material to enhance students' reading, writing, science and math skills.  Leo and Margaret Smith's oldest son, Cory, also attended this academy and now works for Lockheed-Martin in Texas.)  Chelsea said she is studying physics and computer technology.

I just called to get the latest info on her, and she was home and wanted to know when VA-O was going to start our annual Ice Cream Rides!  I told her they start next Tuesday, 6 May, so hopefully we will be seeing her and Mark, or they might even let mother, Jac-ee, join them!  When I know Chelsea can go, I ride with another rider or in the car with her parents so she can ride the bike with Joe.  She once told me it was like "flying like a bird" to her or being "on the front of the Titanic" like in the movie!

If you can help her, this would be wonderful.  Thanks for your support to a very special young lady who has never allowed her blindness to be a disability.

1.   Jerry Allen ('65) of VA - began radiation for cancer last week of February; it was delayed when he was diagnosed with pneumonia on 02/20/08; update of 03/11/08: recovered from pneumonia, is in his third week of radiation, and seems to be doing well. He is back at work and comes home tired, but overall, he is in pretty good shape; update of 03/24/08: last radiation treatment was Friday; "looking good and feeling pretty good except for very irritated skin and fatigue"; update of 04/05/08: "getting better each day"; update of 04/14/08: "now dealing with a blood clot in his pic line; receiving daily injections in the abdomen and taking antibiotics and blood thinners; feels pretty good in spite of everything and his ATTITUDE is great---as usual"; update of update of 04/24/08: "no longer taking daily abdominal injections for blood clot that developed a few weeks ago; everything is looking pretty good.  The PET scan will be in the next few weeks.  We are expecting good results."

Deloris Jackson Morgan ('66) of VA - recovering from surgery on her ankle; update of 04/05/08: "has had a cast reapplied and then replaced in the past 2 weeks, and will have to have the pin in her ankle replaced on April 22nd.  She is in good spirits and gets around on a little scooter.  She can't use crutches because of back surgery fairly recently.  She has a lot of pain and discomfort with that, too"; update of 04/14/08: "doing better and sounded great (on 04/12)"; update of 04/24/08 - "did pretty well on her surgery Tuesday to replace that pin in her ankle.  She will be going with (the Allens) to OBX this weekend to celebrate";
