(26 June 1819 - 26 Jan 1893)"His most lasting claim to fame is the popular myth that he invented baseball, which has been debunked by almost all sports historians, although Doubleday himself never made such a claim."
WHAT?!? Next they'll be trying to tell us that King Arthur, Romeo and Juliet, and Robin Hood were all fictional characters! Pshaww!

HEALTH UPDATES:
Jimmy DeBerry ('64) of VA: From Melody Clendenin DeBerry (Warwick HS - '66) of VA - 06/25/08 - "Jimmy's stroke":
Dearest Carol,
Thanks so much to you and
Judy (Phillips) Allen ('66 - of VA) for all your concern on Jimmy's
behalf. He had a TIA stroke on June 17th after cutting the grass. I was
coming in the door from work when I saw him struggling to get into the
house. After two days in the hospital he was discharged and doing well,
with PT and speech therapy lined up. But at home his symptoms got worse,
and his stroke progressed. We went back to the hospital Sat. night and
yesterday he was transferred to Riverside Rehabilitation Institute on
Chesapeake Avenue (the old Mary
Immaculate Hospital). He has already improved after just one day,
but he has a long way to go. His right side is affected, making it
difficult to walk without aid, and his arm and hand are weak. His speech
is better, but he still has difficulty swallowing, so he is on a yummy
puree diet.
Now he must face major lifestyle changes - his blood sugar and blood
pressure must be controlled at all times. He has vascular disease to
fight. I thank the good Lord each night for not taking him from me.
As we drove to the Rehab Hospital, we went down 16th Street all the way to
the water, and Jimmy enjoyed pointing out to me where each person lived
that he grew up with. We passed the Stuart Gardens apartment
that
we lived in as newlyweds.
I keep you in my prayers, Carol, as well as
Jerry Allen ('65 - of VA) and the
rest of the Typhoons on the prayer list. Please keep Jimmy in your
prayers, too. He really is a keeper.
Love to all
Melody Clendenin DeBerry
Thank you so much, Sweet Melody! We'll continues praying for you both, because you're quite right - he is a keeper!
Oh, yes - be sure to

From Linda Lane Lane
('64) of VA - 06/25/08 - "Death of a Friend":
Dell Rogers
Laws. She was the mother of Paul, Martha, Debbie, Phillip and the
late
Joe Laws. Mrs. Laws lived on the corner of 53
rd Street and Huntington Avenue for many years. She was very active
in Noland Memorial United Methodist Church
for many years. My mother always loved spending time with Dell as she was
always so full of life. I have pictures of her in our home for several
birthday parties wearing her beautiful smile.....Someone once asked me if I was paid by Riverside Hospital to read the
obituaries every day. I think it would probably pay more than my retirement.
Thankfully, we can still afford electricity.
No, Linda- Linda, I surely missed it, or more accurately, I read it with eyes that refused to see. I frequently do this, especially when deaths occur in clusters such as we've experienced this week. If Memorial Editions have not been posted by the morning of the first day they appear, that's a sure sign I have not caught them.
Thank you so much for showing me this.

From Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA - 06/26/08:
Bill
Helms
awakened my memory of my first day of gym class at NNHS.
It was September of 1956, and Helms was calling the role. When my name was
called, I proudly raised my hand. Instead of going to the next name, Helms
hesitated and asked of me, "Is
Hinton Parker ('55) your brother"?
Thrilled to be acknowledged, I loudly replied, "Yes, Sir."
Helms shook his head and stated, "S__t, another one!"
The entire class laughed out loud, leaving me humiliated. For the next six years I did my very best to make Helms as miserable as possible. Even after graduation from HS, his three little words followed me forever. Maybe now, in his death, I can let it go. Sorry, but my memories of him are not good ones. The death of any person usually saddens me... this one does not.
You have my permission to include this in your next newsletter, should you dare to do so.
Jimmy Darlin', as much as I like to emphasize the positives in life, not all of our high school memories are pleasant ones. Sometimes the ones which burn brightest in our minds are the ones which brought us the most pain. I see no value in denying the existence of such things. I didn't post this on Coach Helms' Memorial Newsletter, but I did add it to his teacher page. My failure to do so would not only be dishonest, but would invalidate your experience - and I'll not do that.
Of course, I've no idea what motivated Coach Helms, but I've often wondered why people blurt out thoughtless remarks as he did. Do they not consider the consequences? Do they think they're funny? Do they intend to inflict pain, or are they just not thinking at all? It's always troubled me. I'm sorry his remark haunted you for so many years.

I must say I didn't see that one coming!
I've been earnestly trying to tie up
loose ends in my life for several months now, but as there were so very many,
I've had only marginal success. In addition to MANY items for both
the
Newsletters and the site itself, I thought of five or six crocheted afghans,
countless cross-stitch projects, scrapbooks, and a plethora of organizational
tasks which need to be completed- all of which flashed rapidly and hatefully through my guilt-laden mind
in the split second before I reached the punch line.
Thanks for the laugh, Ronnie!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Words by
Jack Norworth, 1908
(5 Jan 1879 - 1 Sept 1959)
Music by
Albert Von Tilzer
(29 Mar 1878 - 1 Oct 1956)
(1927 version)
Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray" when they'd play.
Her boy friend by the name of Joe
Said, "To Coney Isle, dear, let's go,"
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him I heard her shout.
"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."
Nelly Kelly was sure some fan,
She would root just like any man,
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along, good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Nelly Kelly knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the game sing this song.
