08/12/04 - NNHS Newsletter - It's a Small World, After All!
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today
we have a number of strange and wondrous "coincidences". I personally no
longer believe
in coincidences, but I do think a number of these "small world" items are
interesting, to say the least.

Happy 57th
Birthday today to Dave Arnold ('65) of VA and Linwood Wright ('65) of
VA.
They were not only born the same day, but their mothers were roommates in Dixie
Hospital!
Linwood's mother, of course, was our beloved English teacher,
Mrs. Jeanette Ward
Wright.
Have a good one, Guys!

Speaking of Teachers:
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/10/04:
One day (08/01/04) I was looking at the
Faculty/Staff
page.... I saw Phyllis Nurney, who taught
typing and left NNHS in 1961. As a research challenge, I resolved to locate
her. After some slick
sleuthing (if I do say so myself), I found Phyllis Nurney Glenn living
only a few doors down from
Dave & Pam Arnold's ('65) new home in Williamsburg, where I had recently
attended their wedding
celebration. I asked Pam to verify that it was really Phyllis, which she did.
After all that, I thought that
it was only right to invite her to attend our reunion. Still awaiting her reply.

"Slick sleuthing" would be one of Dave's massive understatements. He
walked me through a bit of it, and
I'm still incredulous that he found her! It was absolutely amazing - a
needle in a haystack! I've almost become
used to his magical abilities, and this one still blew me away.
(Part of the earlier Detective Work):
From Pam Smith Arnold ('65) of VA (to Dave and Me) - 08/04/04:
Okay you two!
We were all right! Isn't that great when that happens? Phyllis
Nurney Glenn, my neighbor,
taught at NNHS from '56 to '61 when she left and went to work in Washington,
D.C. Her cousin,
Carol Nurney (also an
NNHS typing teacher!), now lives in
Smithfield. Phyllis said she would get me
her address....
Yes, Dave, that was fun. So, what's my next assignment, sir:>)? Pam
I' m still amazed! Thanks, Dave and Pam!

Billy
Turner ('65) of TX called me yesterday afternoon to talk about The World's
Greatest Reunion in October and
basketball from forty years back and the like. Billy Turner always makes
me laugh and laugh, and lifts my spirits
tremendously. Thanks, Billy Turner!

Speaking of Texas:
My good friends, the Brophys here in Fayetteville, have a lovely home in
Colleen, TX near Fort Hood to rent. It seems
that Fort Hood has three upcoming mass deployments scheduled, and that is
wreaking havoc with the housing market,
so if you know of anyone needing housing somewhere in the San Antonio area,
please let me know so I can pass on
a sweet deal to you.
I
have a feeling I may have left out one or two of the cool "small world" stories.
That's what happens when I think too
much.
There's a GREAT deal more Super Duper Good Stuff just breaking from several of
you - and you know who you are!
I'll take my chances that most of you haven't discovered it yet (though it's
posted in plain sight!), and save it - and the
Related Big Surprise - for the next Newsletter, as it deserves its own
spotlight.
There are all sorts of things happening between many of y'all -
people finding things and people for each other, people
meeting each other, people calling each other, people "accidentally" bumping
into each other. Sometimes I pass these
bits and pieces on to all of y'all, and sometimes I don't, but they always
uplift me and make me realize how blessed I am
in my association with you. Thanks for everything!
Speaking of Which:
From Fred Eubank ('64) of TX - 08/10/04:
And at about the same moment 0n 08/10/04 - from Jean Baker Howell ('69) of VA:
Great news, Jean! And thanks for your help, Fred!
All you Floridians take extra special care today as the storms approach.
Stay safe and protected, and let us hear
from you to know that you're okay. You know how Mumma worries:
From Yahoo News - 08/12/04:
Thousands in Charley's Path Told to Flee
(AP) - Hundreds of thousands of Tampa
Bay-area residents were ordered Thursday
to get out of the way of a rapidly strengthening Hurricane Charley, as its
weaker
sister, the disorganized Tropical Storm Bonnie, blustered ashore in the Florida
Panhandle. Charley, which had pumped up to nearly 105 mph by early afternoon,
was
expected to hit the state's western coast Friday, possibly bringing heavy rain,
swirling tornadoes and a storm surge of up to 12 feet to the Tampa Bay and Fort
Myers areas.
Speaking of Which:
From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/12/04:
No problem, Joe. Whenever I'm not wet, I like to stay dry.
Y'all take care of each other..
Love to all, Carol

It's a Small World After All
It's a world of
laughter, a world of tears,
It's a world of hopes and a world of fears;
There's so much that we share,
That it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all,
It's a small world after all,
It's a small world after all,
It's a small, small world.
There is just one moon, and one golden sun,
And a smile means friendship to ev'ryone;
Though the mountains divide,
And the oceans are wide,
It's a small world after all
