08/27/04 - NNHS Newsletter - Friday

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I am determined to actually finish this today....

NEWBIE:

1. Edna Johnson Matthews ('64) of VA - 08/27/04 - courtesy of Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA

   Welcome, Edna!  And thanks, Dave!

From Dee Hodges Bartram ('66) of VA - 08/23/04:

Thanks for posting the pictures.  Unfortunately, my new camera had
the wrong date.  It should have been Thursday, September 18, 2003

and not Friday.  Thursday is forever in my image!

I'm sure that it is, Dee!  I changed that date I had added to your photos.  I just thought they were perhaps
taken the next day.  Thanks for the correction.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/24/04:

Carol,
If you ever get tired of the traditional "Happy Birthday" MIDI on the site,
you could alternate it periodically with this one. Very upbeat, very 60s,
very recognizable.

http://members.tripod.com/~jpgr_beatles/midis/files/Birthday.mid

As much as I love "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (seein' as I suggested
it), I have to admit that it is very long and may not be as recognizable
to others as it is to me. If you ever wish to change it and be a little
naughty in the bargain, perhaps:

http://members.tripod.com/~jpgr_beatles/midis/files/WhyDontWeDoItInTheRoad.mid

Well, David, far be it from me to pass up a chance to "be a little naughty".  It took me three days,
Sir, but your changes have been made.  Thanks - your choices are brilliant, as always, Captain!

I can't wait to Google those lyrics!  GIGGLES!

From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 08/25/04:

Carol:  I am catching up on the newsletters, so I know what the notes are about!!  I didn't get though,
Dave Spriggs' mutilated and terrible pic, I just assume that something ELSE had been torn down.......what was it?
Also, I have to go back and get the "cousin" thing!

Dave's image of the former Fuller's was gorgeous as always; Fuller's itself was missing, torn down, vanished
forever --- mutilated.

The fact that Pam Smith Arnold ('65) and I are cousins is an example of psychic genealogy.  I'll nail the proof down
with my pedigree charts later.  She simply has too many characteristics, mannerisms, and expressions of my aunt Alice
and other family members NOT to be my cousin.

Also checked out our churches, Calvary Baptist is facing the crises of whether to close, merge, etc.  Makes me sick....
so I will be taking a lot of pics, because I came into Calvary as an infant!!  My parents were married there in 1943.
Seen a lot of our people come in and go out!  When a church celebrates it's 100th Anniversary (Oct, 1999) that's
quite an accomplishment!  I will be more than sad if Calvary closes.

Oh, that's making me sick, too!  So many of y'all have close connections with that old church!  What a terrible shame!
Please keep us posted, Sarah.

Voted for Nathaniel's show!
Sarah

Thanks, Sarah!  Every vote counts, and the polls are still open!

From Sandy Boatright Carroll ('65) of VA - 08/25/04:

Hi Carol,
Several members of the class of 64, 65 and 66 attended Tabernacle Baptist Church downtown NN.
The church is now located in Denbigh on Lucas Creek Rd in NN. Thanks again for all the wonderful
work you do to keep us all informed about our Typhoon friends,
Sandy Carroll
AKA Sandra Boatright

Ooops!  It appears that we need a new page on "Our Places of Worship".  I'll try to get right on that, Sandy - and thanks!
It's good to hear from you!  See you in October, yes?

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/our-places-worship.html

From Pam Smith Arnold ('65) - 08/26/04:

Carol,
Do you have Carol Anthony's email that you could give me? I'd love to get in touch with her - I always had
a great deal of respect for her.
Thanks. Love - your cousin, Pam

Sorry, Cousin Pam, I don't have that.  Maybe someone else does - Jimmy?  Susie?  Dave?  Somebody???

From Kathy Pilgrim Clark ('63) of VA - 08/25/04:

Carol, I am only part way through the Newsletter (I have voted - for August 14th - "the Jamie Mo Show"!)
but I have to reply to some of the things I have just read.

My ex-husband is John Clark ('57). He owned the Slaughter Lumber Company at #50 N. Mallory Street
in Phoebus.
I probably have the closest Phoebus connection of any Typhoon.  I am probably about the most
knowledgeable about Hampton in general.  I was born in NN though my family moved to Hampton in 1954.
So I went to a Hampton elementary (Willis-Syms-Eaton - where the dances were!) and then on to Sugden's
School.  I came to NNHS as a mouse and rode the CRT bus from LaSalle Ave to Huntington - and back again.
The things you all stayed late to do were, for me, dependant on when the last bus to Hampton left!  And I have
lived in Hampton since (except for an 8 year stay in Poquoson).  I have worked for the City of Hampton for over
27 years.  So I sort of declare myself the resident expert on 'things Hampton'.

The restaurant in question was Fertitta's.  They had a reputation for hot dogs but they also had an endless cup
of pretty darned good coffee.  They are now (in another generation) located in the former Grant City Shopping
Center at N. King and Mercury Blvd.  The other site (the open space at the N/E corner of County and Mallory)
was Fuller's.  You may remember the slogan "Eat dirt cheap at Fuller's"?  I used to have a T-shirt that had a stop
sign on it with the slogan in the stop sign but I lost it when my house burned down in 1989.

I guess that's what I have to say right now, though I may have more to say after I finish reading the Newsletter
LOL, KC

Thanks, Kathy!  You're now Head of our Hampton Department.   Don't worry - you're not alone!  Just look at the Alumni Page.

Frank Gibson ('63) of VA married Judy Fertitta (HHS-'63).   Surely there's a connection there, right, Judy?

Also from Kathy Pilgrim Clark ('63) of VA - 08/25/04:

OK, Carol.  I guess this is confessions night.  But I really do have a life!

I was a student of Joe Madagan's as well.  I took Jr. Lifesaving, passed and was too young to take Sr. Lifesaving.
The next summer, I was going to be old enough in September so I took the Sr. class twice that summer, taking the
test just before my birthday (9/7) because the pool closed before my birthday.  I guess I was given an exemption.
I do remember J.C. Range asking us if we were tired of treading water (after 20 minutes or so) and being ready
to kill the one guy who said he was.  (Saying you were tired was a sure ticket to getting another 10-15 minutes
of water treading!)

The summer after my freshman year at VaTech, I worked for the Jewish Community Center at their Camp Kadima.
Other counselors included Judy Anker and Debby Fink ('65).  In a couple of years. they read of my marriage and
brought me a lovely wedding gift (3 Anchor Hocking mixing bowls, one of which I still have, even after the fire in '89!)
The camp director was Jim Wilson.  Yes, James Percival Wilson.  I taught archery and SWIMMING!!!  Thanks,
Charlie Nuttycombe, J. C. Range and Joe Madagan!!!  I earned $350 that summer.  It was all paid at the end
of the 8 weeks.  I had major big bucks, had had a great time and knew that I was much better off for the experience.

Thanks again, KC

Thank YOU again, Kathy!  What great memories!

Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA sent us another oyster image (from the 1960 Krabba), and it is now showing:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/oysters.html

By the way, if anyone comes up with a better name for that page, please let me know.  Was it originally called "Oyster Alley"?
I certainly do NOT know, but I'm open to suggestions.

   Thanks, Dave!

From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 08/26/04:

Carol -- I think Coach Jack Powers should be on the Famous Marines or Soldiers page.
Some teacher during school years told me he was seriously wounded in WWII in the Pacific
Theater, and was a Marine (I think -- maybe a soldier).

Maybe Joe Madagan ('57 of FL) or Dave Spriggs ('64 of VA) would know how to check this
out for sure.

Thanks, Ron, I quite agree.  Coach Powers was one of my very favorite teachers.  I think he was a Marine Captain,
but I need some corroboration.  Anyone?  Anyone?

If we don't get  definite answer this week, Ron, I'll put him with the Marines, and we can move him later if necessary .

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/26/04:

Dear Conduit Carol:
If Bob Morgan ('56) of MA has to search his copy of the Anchor to identify
Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56) of VA
in order to remember this lovely Typhoon,
then he has been living in the snows of Massachusetts too long. Speaking
of a small world, if Bob is with U.S. Foodservice, Inc. in MA, then it is really
a small world.
Always, Joe

Giggles!  Thanks, Major Madagan!  I'm not even going to touch on the subject of forgotten memories!
I am a grand champion of such things!  My face is turning bright scarlet red at the very thought of things I
managed somehow to forget and had to relearn!

But your point is well taken about Nancy.  She's as lovely as ever!

From Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56) of VA - 08/26/04:

Hey Carol,
I don't know what happened, but I am receiving your newsletters on AOL again!! Just keep it as is -
have them come to both places. Then, I won't miss one!!
Well, guess who was in my office today and introduced herself to me? Susie Overton Jones ('63).
WOW!! Was I ever surprised. She works with one of my agents, asked him who I was and then came
over and introduced herself. How fun!! And, as it turned out, we grew up on the same street in
Stuart Gardens. She lived at one end of the block and I was at the other - and, of course, I was seven
years ahead of her in school. It was so nice talking to her and reliving many memories.
And, Robert Morgan ('56)? Yes, I remember him. Hello Robert!! And, Joe Madagan ('57), what can I
say about him? He was a cutie! Joe, you are too funny!!!
Thanks again Carol. You have made a difference in all of our lives. You brought my cousin Pam Smith
Arnold ('65)
and me together. That was very special!!!
Keep up the good work and THANKS!
Nancy

What a lovely story!  Thanks, Nancy!  That does me such a world of good to hear!

From Susie Overton Jones ('63) of VA - 08/26/04:

Carol,
Today I went to Warwick Travel Agency to pick up the travel brochures for a 2005 cruise.  While there I
introduced myself to
Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56), knowing from your web site that she works there, and
still is as pretty as can be.
While we were catching up on "school days", we discovered that we both lived on 15th street in Stuart Gardens.
Then we were remembering all the alumni that lived on our street.  To name a few, Dennis Holbrook ('64),
Judy Bell (Nachman - '64), Frances JohnsonJimmy Moody ('61), Phillip Hammond ('64), Bobby Fox ('63),
Bennett Stein (?)
.  I know there were a lot more, but "sometimers" is taking over.
Take care, see you soon.

Isn't that just such fun, Susie?!?  It's really incredible to me - I LOVE these stories!  Thanks!
I'm looking forward to seeing you again in October.

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 08/26/04:

Carol, what are we voting on?  (I have missed something obviously)...I cannot wait to see Linda Lane Lane ('64)
and I hear that Donna Pipkin (Bruckner - '64) is coming to the reunion...so exciting...we were great friends at
Woodrow Wilson School and she would stroll her baby brother over to my house and push the stroller with her
feet while standing on her hands.  It made my mother a little nervous and she would always tell me not to l
et Donna stroll MY brother Al...haha
Jean

Hey, Jean!  We're voting for my son's radio debut, and for the show to be made full-time.  I think the voting ends tonight
at midnight, so there's still time if you haven't cast your all-important ballot.  In other words, this is a shameless attempt
at ballot-stuffing, but hey, he's cute.

Please go to this website and vote for me to win the "Talk Show Survivor" contest. On this site you can
listen to a clip from the show as well as the competition (On second thought, don't listen to the competition,
and just vote for us, hehe). The winner of this contest will have their own show for one month and could
ultimately get their own radio talk show spot and get PAID.

Just go to the web address below, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and vote for the "Jamie Mo Show."

Nathaniel is the guy with the deep baritone voice who keeps saying, "Right" - HA-HA-HA!

   Thanks, y'all!

Also from Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 08/26/04:

Wow...that Nachman's Tea Room memory from Jo Ann Stewart ('64) blew me away...Betty Sue Lanier (Rough - '64)
and I would walk up to Nachman's after school (her Dad worked there in the Men's Dept.) and he would treat us
to a brownie and a soda and then would give us a ride home when he got off from work...her parents were so good
to me...treated me like one of their own.  I stayed with her grandmother "Nanny" one time when she and her parents
went on a little trip...and we were sitting there at night and I said "Nanny, are you afraid to be alone at night?  and
she said, "reach under that chair you are sitting in and see what is there"...and I did and it was a very small pistol...and
she said, "It is loaded and I know how to shoot it!"  My eyes were as big as saucers and when I went home I reported
to my parents that "Betty Sue's nanny has a gun and knows how to shoot it!"  I had great respect for Nanny before that
but even more AFTER!
Jean

HA-HA-HA!  What a great story!  It reminds me of another I heard this week......

   See you soon, Jean!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 08/26/04:

Carol,
Here're a few answers to your query re the folks in the pic:

Okay, let's say, George Coussoulos ('58), Julius Benton ('58), ___, ___, Joe Drewry ('58), Sandra Weaver ('58), Carol Letts ('58),
and Gary Bunting ('58)
Perhaps Joe Drewry knows who the ladies in the car were?  How about it, Joe?
Sending Mr. Mac birthday cards is a tremendous idea -- thanks, Thelma!  I just designed him a birthday card on my computer
and scanned in Julius' and my senior class photos on the left inside of the card -- hopefully, to remind him who we are.  Here's
how the scanned yearbook photos appear inside the card:

What a thoughtful idea, Renee!  Thanks for sharing that with us!  And thanks for the additional names!  I've added them
on "Our Old Cars".

From Bob Butler (HHS -'64) of VA - 08/26/04:

Thank you for the wonderful evening. .... I've just spent over 2 hours reminiscing about Buckroe Beach and the times
when I went there. Your website brought many pleasant memories back ... plus a few of those filled with fright,
embarrassment and the usual mixed emotions of youth, etc.

I'm including with this e-mail, an image of a Wooden Nickel sold at the Buckroe Beach Gift Shop, another variety
of a Buckroe Beach Admission Ticket, plus an interesting example of a token for Bay Shore, the Colored Buckroe Beach.

You may do with the images as you wish. They need resizing: The Bay Shore Token is 25.5mm (silver color shown,
a bronze variety also exists), the ticket is 50mm long, and the Wooden Nickel is 38mm. Somewhere I also have a
small pocket knife Souvenir of Buckroe Beach, Hampton, VA.

Thanks again for creating your site about Buckroe.

Sincerely, Bob Butler
HHS / 1964
My wife, Carolyn (Holloway) and I operate a Gumball and Prize machine business throughout VA and into NE N.C.

WOWZERS!  What a nice surprise!   I hope to have these four cool new additions posted before morning.

Thanks so much, Bob!  And if you see Paulette Westphal and Bettyrene Cook at your 40th Reunion, tell 'em hi for me!

From Bruce Korusek (JMHS - '66) of VA - 08/26/04:

Hi, Carol,
The question has come up...from someone at HRT....what colors were the streetcars that operated
in Hampton and Newport News.  Do you or any of your friends know?
Bruce

Boy, I surely don't, Bruce.  Anyone out there with that information?  Fred?  Dave?  Anyone?

Bruce also sent us four more old CRT images!  Thanks, Bruce! Once again, I will hopefully have those posted within the
next several hours.

Also from Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 08/27/04:

Hey!  For the '64 Reunion, are we supposed to go on Friday night?  I know we spoke about this on the phone,
but as I creep closer to another year older my brain is freaking out and I don't remember!!    Let me know
so I can beg, borrow or steal the $$ and get it to Dave before the DEADLINE!!  Sarah

AHA - a really critical question!  Dave Spriggs ('64) of course can answer this much better, of course,
but I'll give you my take on it.  Friday night will be wonderful - pretty much everything you'd expect from
a great, well-planned reunion - seeing all those old friends, good food, lotsa old music (but playing softly
enough for memorable conversations), plenty of dancing - you wouldn't want to miss it.  But if you're forced
to choose only one night to attend, BY ALL MEANS make it Saturday night!   That's when the absolutely
incredible, spectacular, spectacular, unbelievable, unimaginable, super-duper big guns will await you.
Surprise after glorious surprise - as many tears as laughs, practically no emotion left untouched.  (Tissues
will be provided on each table.)  I really cannot throw in adequate adjectives to describe what is planned -
and I don't even know all of it myself!  I can assure you of one thing, however.  No matter how much I've
hyped this, when it's over, you'll come to me and say, "You just didn't express it well enough."

That's because those words do not exist.

BE THERE!!!  WHOEVER YOU ARE - WHATEVER CLASS WAS YOURS - THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!!!

Friday on My Mind

(The Easybeats, 1967)

Monday morning feels so bad,
Ev'rybody seems to nag me
Coming Tuesday I feel better,
Even my old man looks good,
Wednesday just don't go,
Thursday goes too slow,
I've got Friday on my mind

Chorus

Gonna have fun in the city,
Be with my girl she's so pretty,
She looks fine tonight,
She is out of sight to me,
Tonight....I spend my bread,
Tonight...I lose my head,
Tonight...I got to get tonight
Monday I have Friday on my mind.

Do the five day drag once more,
Know of nothing else that bugs me
More than working for the rich man,
Hey I'll change that scene one day,
Today I might be mad,
Tomorrow I'll be glad,
I've got Friday on my mind,

(Repeat Chorus)
