Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   Yes, yes, I know I used this song a year ago today, but it's one of my very favorites, so shoot me.

   Besides, the song is so deliciously sad, and makes me cry so very hard.  That has to be a good thing, right? 
But most of all, my Magic Shower told me to use it, and who am I to argue with such a device?

   The point is, today is the first day of Autumn - a time for new beginnings.  Take advantage of them!

 


 The 54-Year Reunion of the Class of 1951
  will be held on on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at Kiln Creek
 - a Sunday lunch brunch from Noon to 2:00 PM.
The cost is $21 per person or $42 per couple.

Woo-woo..   Cow-a-BUNGA Dudes!  Thanks for erasing the white spec, Nathaniel (Harty -Hillsboro HS
- '97, Hillsboro, IL - of IL) .   Now, can you do something about the lack of North Shore size surf that my
Dewey Weber was designed for?   It looks pretty silly, me standing on the shore on a flat glassy day like that.  
It looks like I just brought that board for shade.   And how about putting some hair on my chest?

   Oh, what a great plan, Bill!  Let's carry that plan a few steps further!

   In my own very proper Southern family, we were taught (one way or another) that image and appearances are
of prime importance, far more so than say, oh, truth, for instance.  Now if Nathaniel would just take some pictures
of me into PhotoShop,carve away a few pounds, do a chin and neck lift, and a tummy tuck - oh, and definitely
relieve my upper arms of their blubber coating, restore the glow to my skin, and the color to my hair (no, wait a
minute - Lady Clairol and I can take care of that last problem ourselves), then we could simply enlarge and
mount the said images, and use them in place of the real me.  YEAH!  That should do it!

   Reality is soooo overrated, doncha know.....

Hi, Carol:

Boy, I may have gotten myself in deeper than I thought since I do not know how the Key West residents
spell their nickname. However, let me give it a try, since Ron Miller ('59) of NC raised the question. I
am guessing it is spelled "Chonks". It could be spelled with a K, I am just not sure. Surely there will be
a few subscribers who are "Parrot Heads" and visit Key West often who will know how to spell the
nickname given to the residents. They are a stubborn lot, much like the folks who lived in Gloucester
County, Virginia near Hayes Post Office who called their section of the county, "Ginny" but you would
never find a town by that name listed on any map. It was just a name derived from the watermen who
lived in that area. I remember they had a reputation for not educating their children, and sending them
to work on the fishing boats as soon as they were strong enough to work.

Correction to my previous email ... Hobgood's was on Buckroe Avenue ... NOT Old Buckroe Road ....
guess the 3.2 stuff has a lasting effect :-).

I'll send in my 'official' reunion form shortly. This will be the first time I've been around so many
Typhoons since Thanksgiving 1970 (well ... except for the breakfast at last year's reunion that you
so graciously invited me to attend). Sounds like fun! Let me know if you want any Hampton/NN
memorabilia for display ... like "Red's pig" yearbook, Turkey Day football programs from 48, 49, 51,
69, or other such stuff. Oh yeah ... I seem to have several Anchors and Beacons too.

   Thanks, Tommee!  I'm still in awe that our marvelous Reunion Committee so completely opened this Reunion. 
I've never heard of such a thing happening anywhere before - but then, we have something rare and wonderful
here that has probably never existed anywhere before.

   I'll certainly look forward to that skit!

   Yes, do leave those crab shells home.  Your red Corvette will be reminder enough of your Crabber connections!

Hi Carol: 

I think the grape drinks were called "Tinys", maybe because they were in such small bottles. 
They were wonderful and I always had a dime for one.  Wish we could find them?  : )

   Hey, Helen!  You may have something there!  I vividly remember the non-carbonated Pals and Tru-Ades, as
well as the carbonated Grapettes (and of course the strangely wonderful chocolate Brownie drinks!) but there
may also have been a carbonated grape drink called "Tiny"!  I can almost remember it.....

   "Anyone?  Anyone?"

   I've been waiting for you to send me some of your own Magic Shower Songs, Miss Helen.  I'm afraid mine is
starting to sing me reruns!  Although this morning, it opened with "Exodus" - and was especially loud on the line,
"So take my hand and walk this land with me, And walk this lovely land with me".  It must have been influenced
by Tom's East End tour - coming up next!!!

Your work on the web site is awesome, and every newsletter brings back memories of my days in the
East End of Newport News ... Stuart Gardens ... Anderson Park near the small boat harbor and
those nights on Stuart Gardens beaches ... well, those stories will be for another time. 

Buying gas from Dave Arnold's ('65 - of VA) dad's gas station at 25th and Oak ... and getting lunches
from Bobby Callis' ('64 - of WV) dad's store across from Pop Arnold's Gas Station ... and riding
all over the east end on my bike on Saturday afternoons looking for a "touch" football game in the big court
yard areas in the Stuart Gardens Apartments ...
 

Recently you listed some classmates who lived in "Seven Oaks"... my dad had a grocery store at 35th and
Wickham for many years ... I would work there on Saturdays, helping him to stock shelves and even rode a
delivery bike thru out the neighborhoods there, until the BeLo grocery chain, caused my father to sell ... I
imagine I delivered to many of those homes ...
 
Continued good days to you, Carol, and keep up the good work ... C U N and all my former school mates
in October at the Great Typhoons Family Reunion of the Class of 1965 ...

4o-Year Reunion ... the store is still open.

   Oh, WOW, Tom!  Your memories so closely paralleled my own it was almost like bicycling around Stuart
Gardens with you!  Well, make that walking.....  My balance was so poor that my mama flattened the tires on my
sister's old bike one day after repairing them because after witnessing my biking skills, she knew it was only a
matter of time before I ran into a moving car.........

   I was ready to link up to Roger's Confectionary when I noticed that once again that page had never been
created...  Sigh.

   But as for your daddy's grocery store - what was the name???  For years now I've been trying to recall a small
grocery somewhere down there, and can't quite remember, but we should surely place it on Our Old Stomping
Grounds as well!  The one that's been floating around in my mind and driving me bonkers (I know - How can I
tell?!?) was also on Wickham, but on the opposite side of the street from the pool, and of course I've no idea
what block that might have been.  Was it called Sammy's, maybe?  Were they possibly one and the same?!?  I
think that dry cleaners I've been trying to remember was also on Wickham, also on that side of the road, also
down there away from Stuart Gardens a bit ... somewhere.

   See, the way this is all supposed to work is - y'all do all the remembering for me (as my brain has long since
atrophied), and then I make the page, and the pictures magically appear, and then I say, "OH, YEAH!  THAT'S
the place!"

   Now where were we? 

   Oh, yes, the reunion!  Oh, goody!  I can scarcely wait to see everyone again!!!

Enjoyed the comments from Joe Madagan ('57 - of FL) and Pam Givens (of Northern VA) in ref
to Northern Virginia. I guess I'm confused to the point where I don't know where I reside. I live in Triangle
which is north of Fredericksburg, but not considered " Northern Virginia ". However one foggy night I believe
I saw a "grey ghost" riding by on a stead waving a pair of blue Yankee officer's trousers. Don't let anyone
sell Northern Virginia short, I haven't met anyone that admits being from here in 17 years.
 
At another time I'll tell about seeing " the lights ", in West Point.

"You're absolutely right about the unique beauty of a Typhoon Girl..  I believe there was even a song by the
Embers, or maybe the Tams - no it was General Johnson - that went: " Oh those Typhoon Girls  ( Typhoon
Girls ) .. Best in the world..  California girls are sexy.. New York girls are too.. But Newport News Girls got
( da-dum ) good looks ( yeah! ) and sweet personalities too..( da-da-da / da-da-da / da-dum-DAH! )' "
 
This song got by me somehow, and I am glad to know that the beautiful TYPHOON Girls were recognized
in a song. They were sure special. I landed one (Eva Ellis - '61) that has been a faithful and beautiful wife
and mother and grandmother.
 
The sweet personalities are reflected in the many responses to you receive to the Newsletter.
