From Eric Huffstutler (BHS - '75) - 09/29/04:
Carol,
I am wondering if my Paramount Theater question is a bit confusing as why I
haven't gotten a response yet? I was talking
about seeing music acts coming up (not in the past) which show
them playing at the Paramount Theater Auditorium
in Newport News. Haven't found any information about the theater - if it was
restored after years of being condemned or
if some other building was named that? I saw that one act coming up in October,
Dr. John, was slated to play at the Paramount
but now find him at the Ferguson Arts Center instead. Are the Paramount
and Ferguson one and the same, just renamed
at the last minute or has something happened to the Paramount?
Eric
Oh. OH. OHHHH!!! Well, THAT'S a horse of a different color, isn't it?!? Well, I see. Uh-huh. Wellll, actually, ummm, I don' know
Okay, all you local
historians and current events types out there. This ought not to be so
difficult. Anyone have an answer for Eric?
Anyone? Anyone?

From Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA - 09/29/04:
In response to the "finest basketball team" .... I was
referring to the dynasty of NNHS and the '64 State championship team. Not
to dismiss the 64 Hampton team .... I agree they peaked at an 'inopportune' time
:-). The '69 HHS team also peaked .... I would
hold them in equal company with both '64 teams .... whether they would have done
better than Warren and company .... one can
only venture a guess. I'm not sure anyone could have taken down that bunch ...
the 100 straight home victories is a phenomenal feat!
No Carol .... hasn't been a problem to attract 'em ....
just looking for a good one to settle with. And ya know ... the best ones came
from NNHS, right??? (shameless plug). Since Newport News closed at the end of my
sophomore year it did limit the dating opportunities.
(don't worry .... I'm a Crabber by birth (I have documentation) .... they can't revoke it by association with the blue & gold :-) )
giggles back atcha ....
babe
Ahhh, good. Thanks, Tom - I was relatively certain I had read you correctly on that basketball statement. We can all rest easily now!
No, Babe, somehow I didn’t think attracting women was posing any problem for you!! Settling down is usually a little stickier and trickier, though. And yes, it is a well known fact that the best ones all came form NNHS. WILD GIGGLES!!!
Thanks again, Babe!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 09/29/04:
And you do it so very well, Joe!
I am in total awe of your amazing recall! I think I must have lost that
portion of my brain to those three mini-strokes. No, on second
thought, I do not believe that part of my brain ever really existed.
Thanks again, Adonis!

From Brian Beachum ('72) - 09/29/04 - in response to the ice cream truck story from Eric Huffstutler (BHS - '75) - 09/28/04:
For anyone who wants to relive a part of their
past, try visiting the Eastern Shore for the following "Blast from the Past"
in the Mr. Whimpy Dari-Dream Ice Cream trucks.
Dari-Dream, Chincoteague, VA

Oh, what a nostalgic image, Brian! You do beautiful work! Thanks for sharing that with us!

From Barbara Dye-Hensley ('69) of ? - 09/29/04:
Thanks, Barbara. I passed your note along to Glenn - finally........

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX) - 09/29/04:
WOWZERS! That's a cool story! Thanks, Glenn!

From Dee Hodges Bartram ('66) of VA - 10/01/04:
Janice Poole Mallory
('66) e-mailed me Bev Miller's mother's obituary. She asked that I pass it
on to you:
Virginia H. Miller
NASHVILLE, TENN. - Virginia Ham
Miller, 87, widow of E. George Miller, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Alive
Hospice Residence
in Nashville, Tenn. Born May 11, 1917, in Hampton, Va., she was a lifelong
resident of the Peninsula. An active member of First United
Church of Christ, she was a member of the Board of Deacons, Women's Fellowship,
Pearl Baker Sunday School Class and Senior Saints singing group. After 46 years
of service, she retired from Sturgis Business Forms Company. She later became
one of the 'Daily Press
Ladies,' a self-named group who, although previously retired, decided to return
to work again. She also continued to be an active member
of several bowling leagues. Remembered by her friends as eager to give to
others, Virginia was always willing to send cards to the sick,
visit with the shut-in and drive those no longer able. Her gracious manners,
warm smile and willingness to help will be missed by family
and friends. Preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and two brothers,
she is survived by her daughter, Beverly M. Cowell
of Nashville, Tenn., future son-in-law, Ken Sledge and his daughters, Katherine,
Jennifer and Emily Sledge, of Nashville, Tenn. At her
request, the body was donated to the medical community for scientific study and
education. The family request that expressions
of sympathy be made to Riverside Hospice at Riverside Hospital in Newport News,
Va., Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, Tenn.,
or Gilda's Club.
Published in the Daily Press on 10/1/2004.
Thanks, Dee - and thank Janice for us - and tell her "Hi".
We continue to hold Beverly in our thoughts at this difficult time. Bev's a member of the Class of '66.

UPDATES:
I found a couple more images on eBay and pilfered them for First
Presbyterian and Trinity Lutheran. Hey, if you're gonna swipe
something, it might as well be for a church, right?

Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo
Words and Music by Branislau Kaper
and Helen Deutsch
On every tree there sits a bird,
Singing a song of love.
On every tree there sits a bird,
And everyone I've ever heard
Breaks my heart with all the words,
Singing a song of love.
A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a sad song, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo.
A song of love is a song of woe;
Don't ask me how I know.
A song of love is a sad song,
For I have loved and it's so.
I sit at the window and watch the rain, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo,
Tomorrow I'll probably love again, Hi-Lili----Hi-Lili----Hi-Lo.
