Dear Friends and Classmates, I just have a couple of items for you today, and then I may actually remain QUIET for a few days. No promises, though. &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*& From Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky (’59) in Fayetteville, NC – RE: Hit # 10,000 - 11/07/02: Dear Carol, Yes, I think I am the winner! I just felt lucky! Love, Eleanor Nice try, Eleanor, but I can’t see how you could suddenly be in a court somewhere in Virginia! But you are cute, and you are my sister, so perhaps I can come up with a suitable reward for you anyhow. Meanwhile, our Mystery Winner who DID make Hit #10,000 is still at large. This same person checked the site once more yesterday, and again this morning at 8:05. The computer came from: <mail.courts.state.va.us>. Could it be YOU?!? If you’re unable to e-mail me, perhaps you could sign the guest book - or phone or snail mail me: 219 Four Ply Lane, Fayetteville, NC 28311-9305, 910-488-9408. &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*& From Fred Mays (’60) in NN, VA – 11/08/02: Carol: Thank you so much for all the hard work you do. It is amazing to me how you do it. I am Fred Mays of the class of '60. I saw the mention of the death of Arlene Ellis Burch's mother, for which I was grateful to be made aware. I did not know this. Arlene and Carroll Burch live in my neighborhood (Lansdowne), here in the Denbigh area of Newport News. I missed this in the paper as the last name did not click. Arlene and Carroll are very fine people. I thought I would give their address, in the event any one wanted to drop them a card. It is: (available upon request) Additionally, I would like to make a correction about Carolyn... (Arlene's sister)....she
graduated with me in 1960...I began 1st grade with her at new Magruder School in
Stuart Gardens. She sang, "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth" in front
of the entire school and the PTA, I recall....this was in the first grade....see, I remember
everything....at least what many consider trivia. The sister Barbara graduated in 1961
with my wife, Patty Andrews Mays ('61).
Carol....keep up the great work and I look forward to your seeing my memorabilia collection when you are in the area. Again, my phone number is 757-874-4401. I recently acquired the framed N.N.H.S. diploma of Miss Attie Kennon (I knew her). She graduated in 1904! I have another large framed and matted picture of her in her graduation gown, holding her diploma. It says on the back her name and N.N.H.S., June 1904. I also have a framed picture of her nephew, Stanley Kennon, who was MIA in W.W.II, then found to have been shot down and killed. He too, graduated from N.N.H.S. I have their pictures in places giving the appearance they are looking at each other. I got Stanley's picture at a garage sale and they did not know who he was. Only that it belonged to the seller's late father-in-law. I asked a friend of mine, G. Jack Smith, who is in his 70's, did he know who this man is.....he said, "Why yes, that was my good friend Stanley Kennon!" He then told me he was the nephew of Miss Attie Kennon. It was he who gave me her diploma and picture....he was the executor of her estate as I think she had no family and she had never married. Well, I must close....I can talk FOREVER....I think this is why my mother takes such a dim view of me. Take care, Frederick W. Mays (N.N.H.S., Class of 1960) Thanks, Fred! I made those corrections this morning. I’m glad to see your memory is intact. I can remember in Mrs. Hatcher’s first grade class at Magruder (right, Jeannie, Chip, Linwood, and Rip?) that a little blond boy named Ward Cash (who was also missing his two front teeth) stood before the class following a game of eraser tag, and sang, “Cross Over the Bridge”. He was wearing a red plaid shirt, and kept his hands in his pants pockets as he sang. I was impressed by his courage, as I was too scared and shy to even speak to anybody. (Funny how SOME things change.) Just don’t ask me to remember anything important! And I’m still upset we weren’t able to visit your museum last month. What a silly time to get sick! Rats! But thanks for writing, Fred. I personally LOVE long letters! Y’all take care, and have a nice holiday weekend. Love to all, Carol |
