From Me ('65) of NC:
A big THANK YOU to all of ya'll who have made financial contributions to the web site lately! They are always appreciated!

From Christopher Freeman (PHS) - 11/05/04:
Hi, Christopher
- thanks for your query! When we opened "Our Old Stomping Grounds" nearly
two years ago, it pertained
almost exclusively to downtown Newport News, but has since expanded far beyond
those boundaries. Similarly, people
other than NNHS graduates have joined our ranks, and the base of knowledge and
information has thus continued to enlarge.
We now even have
a couple of Hampton experts - Kathy Pilgrim Clark ('63) of VA, and Tom
Norris (HHS - '73) - who
coincidentally grew up in the same neighborhood. As it stands now, the
only elementary schools we have listed are those
which fed into Newport News High School - which made perfect sense to me two
years ago. I have come to realize that it's
just plain silly for me to keep creating artificial boundaries for anything on
the web site, because they all fall sooner or later,
as our circle of friends enlarges, and we come to rediscover and share the joy
within ourselves and our memories.
I'm not sure of
your time frame here, but it should only be a matter of time before we'll have
some answers for you. Tom
is out of town this week on business and beyond the reach of his computer, but
he'll return soon, and Kathy is a wealth
of information.
Besides, you
invoked the name of one of my favorite places on earth, Buckroe Amusement Park,
so you should be getting
preferential treatment!

- Arnold H. Glasgow
From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 11/05/04:
How wonderful! Thanks for sharing all these treasures with us, Sarah!
Of course, they're ALL MISSING
right now, because my computer has gone NUTZO and won't let me
access half my
pages!!!
I'm sure it'll get over it soon....
Have fun with your grandbabies, Miss Sarah!
From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA to Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 11/05/04:
Now, Wayne, Honey, (as I've said, it's not my fault - YOU started it!) you know perfectly well that picture of you is just precious!
And if
my computer hadn't gone NUTZO, by
not
letting me access half
my pages, we could ALL be
enjoying this image now!!!
I'm sure it'll get over it soon....
Tastes Like Chicken - a Southern Essay by Newt Harlan (not particularly appealing to vegetarians)
From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 11/05/04:
Hi, Glenn!
I've not really heard from Joyce in a couple of years. I'm not even sure
she's still online, as I used to hear from her
quite frequently/
And I should
think that if anyone knows anything about the next reunion for the Class of
1960, it would be Fred Mays. What's
the story, Fred? Thanks - and thank you, Glenn, for your query!
From my friend, Judy, in IL - 11/07/04:
No plastic wrap in microwave!
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in
their newsletters worth noting... This information is being circulated
at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer, especially
breast cancer. Don't freeze your plastic water bottles with water as
this also releases dioxins in the plastic.
Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle hospital was
on a TV program explaining this health hazard. (He is the manager
of the Wellness Program at the hospital.)
He was talking about dioxins and how bad they
are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the
microwave using plastic containers.
This applies to foods that contain fat. He
said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins
into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens
and highly toxic to the cells of our
bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or ceramic containers
for heating food. You get the
same results, without the dioxins.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen
and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated
in something else Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's
just safer to use tempered glass,
Corning Ware, etc. He said we might remember when some of the fast food
restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is
one of the reasons.
To add to this, Saran wrap placed over foods
as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins
into the food, use paper towels.
Yikes! Tastes like dioxin! Thanks, Judy!

From Edna Whitcomb Harrison ('65) of VA - 11/07/04:
Carol,
I enjoy your newsletters. In fact that is the one place that I go to
everyday, even without an e-mail from you to remind
me. We all owe you a lot more than we can ever repay. If it had not been for
you, most of us would have lost touch with our
classmates. At the reunion, more than one person spoke to me of you and it was
only in complimentary terms. Your name
and your website have traveled to the homes of countless people even in other
countries. I guess you might even consider
yourself famous.
I am retiring on Dec. 1st. It is time to get on with life and living it.
My husband (Jack Harrison - '61) and I both enjoyed the recent
reunion with the class of 1964. The
room was
literally filled with people. The great love that was expressed between our
classmates and school mates was definitely felt
by those that attended. The great reverence for our school, teachers, coach, and
principal was also felt. Newport News
High School was a school that can never be
duplicated. The name should never be used again for any high school. To do so
would tarnish the reputation of the school as the present schools have to deal
with violence, etc.
Thank you for all of your efforts to keep our Newport News High School
family together.
Edna
WOWZERONI!
What a beautiful note! Thank you so much for those kind words, Edna!
Big Girls might not Cry,
but sometimes
their eyes well with tears and their faces become a bit stained!
And
congratulations on your retirement, Edna! I was thinking about retiring
myself, but then I realized I never did anything in the first
place, so that's going to thwart my efforts somewhat.
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 11/07/04:
ATTENTION ALL TYPHOONS: If you attended Friday
and/or Saturday night of the Class of 1964's Fortieth Reunion, then you probably
saw and enjoyed the continuous slide show which ran throughout both evenings.
You can now relive those magic nostalgic moments with your own copy of the slide
show. There are 259 images contained in the show, and it was compiled in
MicroSoft Powerpoint format. If you do not have Powerpoint
on your computer, you can download and install the free Powerpoint Viewer from
Microsoft at this URL:

If you wish to receive a copy, I only ask that you make
a $10.00 (or more) donation to the Class of 1964 Treasury.
Make your donation check payable to “NNHS Class of 1964” and mail it to:
NNHS CLASS OF 1964
P.O. BOX 6387
NORFOLK VA 23508-0387
Be sure to include your mailing address and write "Slide Show" in the "memo"
area of your check.
OHHH - thanks so much, Dave! So
often during the reunion, I glanced back over at the screen (having already
watched the slide
show myself several times), and saw a group of people sitting or standing by the
screen, nearly mesmerized by the images. It put
a lump in my throat each time.
Here again, I
cannot imagine anyone's NOT wanting a copy of this. If you saw it before,
you'll want to relive it. If you were so
unfortunate as to not have been there with us, you'll surely want to know what
you missed.
I can't even
describe to you the feelings and emotions that this show will inevitably evoke
in you, but as you watch it, you'll feel the
great love of Newport News which infuses Dave's production. This is a real
treasure. Thank you, David - from all of us!

From Thelma Spade Roberts ('67) of VA - 11/08/04:
Just wanted to pass along to you – Horace Elvington ('57) of VA has been
ill. He might be encouraged to receive

Take care all. Thelma
Thanks for letting us know, Thelma. We're so sorry to hear this. Y'all send those cards and make those calls - you do it so well.
Have fun in California with your family, Thelma!
From Eric Huffstutler (BHS - '75) - 11/08/04:
That would have been Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - and today is his 65th Birthday! What a nice surprise for him! Thanks, Eric!

Also from Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 11/06/04:
Dave sent me 77
more images from the disposable cameras on each table top Friday night.
I'm picking the best images to share
with you, and I would have had some posted by now, but
my computer has gone NUTZO and won't
let me access half
my pages!!!
I'm sure it'll get over it soon....
I hope that I
will also, because it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth right now - which
doesn't taste a THING
like
CHICKEN!!!
Y'all take care of each other.
Love to all, Carol

O-kaaaay, thanks, Nick - I think....! It definitely beats your earlier
suggestions of Veggie Tales and Sponge Bob Square Pants for a theme!
