Captain
Glenn Dolphin, USMC Veteran, and now FBI Special Agent, delivered an
outstanding speech to honor the Marines and Sailors and Soldiers who died
during the bombing of the Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Glenn was a survivor of
that attack, and has written a book giving an account of this terrorist attack
on the Warriors sent to keep peace under President
Ronald Reagan. He spoke last evening at the Sergeant Major
Michael Curtin USMC (Ret) Marine Corps League Detachment. Michael
Curtin was also a first responder as a fireman with the New York City Fire
Department and lost his life in efforts to rescue victims and co-workers when
the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City was attacked by
terrorist on September 11, 2001.
Thank you so much, Major Madagan!

From Dave Spriggs
('64) of VA - 11/10/07 - "Luigi’s":
Well,
Renee (Helterbran Benton - '59 - of VA) is not
going to like this report. We seem to have one of the agonizing mysteries which
appear from time to time: People with vivid recollections and no documentary
evidence to support them.
At the Hilton Library, I looked at Hill’s Directories from 1950-1960, except for
1953, which they do not have. In none of them could I find a listing for a
Luigi’s. I looked in the alphabetical listings, then in the street address
listings … nada. I looked in the only telephone directory they had from the
50’s (1958); no Luigi’s. As Renee and
Norm (Covert - '61 - of MD) seemed so certain that
Luigi’s was located just behind the Paramount and next to the flower shop, I
recorded the businesses at that location on 33rd Street from 1950-1960 (less
1953).
1950: 208 ½ Brooks Antiques
210 Paramount Florists
1951: 208 ½ was not listed
210 Paramount Florist
1952: 208 ½ Mac’s Place (Mac Thomas)
210 Paramount Florist
1954: 208 ½ Mike’s Place
210 Paramount Florist
1955: 208 ½ Mike’s Place
210 Paramount Florist
1956: 208 ½ Mike’s Place
210 Paramount Florist
1957: 208 ½ Mike’s Place
210 Paramount Florist
1958: 208 ½ Mike’s Place
210 Paramount Florist
1959: 208 ½ John’s Little Place
210 Paramount Florist
1960: 208 ½ John’s Little Place
210 Paramount Florist
There is truly a mystery here, with at least three Typhoons remembering Luigi’s.
I trust that someone will have the answer.
This is getting "curiouser
and curiouser"..... I'm
reminded of that Forrestal plane crash mystery which dragged on for years....

From Evelyn Vretos ('55) of VA - 11/10/07:
Hi Carol,
In honor of the USMC
birthday I'd like to pass on some info about my uncle, Col. James P.
Mariades, Ret., who now resides in Dallas, Texas. On 8 Nov he was awarded a
Congressional Veteran Commendation presented to him by
Congressman Michael Burgess,
representing Texas' 26th District. During my uncle's service in the USMC he
earned the Navy Cross and a Silver Star. Before his retirement he was
Commandant of the Marine Corps Detachment at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. It was
there I met Mrs. Jackie Kennedy - my uncle had invited her to attend a
special Sunset Parade, afterwards she dined at his quarters.
This was her first official appearance after her husband passed away - her
children were with her.
My uncle, now is his mid 80's, is in good health, is proud he can still get into
his uniform - his weight has stayed the same. I am so very proud of him!
Thank you for all you do for NNHS - I'll be in
touch during the holidays.
Love, Evelyn Vretos (NNHS '55)
WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI!!! I found this account online:
From http://burgess.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=78338:
Rep. Burgess presents 2007 Congressional Veteran
Commendations
Lewisville, TX, Nov 8 -
Lewisville, TX – Today U.S. Rep. Michael C. Burgess (R-Lewisville), although he
was unable to attend the event due to the voting schedule of the House of
Representatives, recognized the five veterans who received this year’s
Congressional Veteran Commendation (CVC). The CVC was created three years ago to
honor the distinguished veterans of Texas’ 26th Congressional District.
This year’s commendations were presented at the fifth annual “Salute Our
Veterans” luncheon sponsored by the Highland Village Business Association and
the City of Highland Village. The five recipients of this year’s Congressional
Veteran Commendation are Walter Dyer of Highland Village, Susanne Hechinger of
Flower Mound, James Mariades of Copper Canyon,
William Springfield of Flower Mound, and Edward Weir of Denton.
“These extraordinary individuals were honored for their patriotic, dedicated
service in the Armed Forces of the United States and continued beneficial
service to their communities,” said Rep. Burgess. “They have not only served in
our armed forces but have also continued their dedication to the nation by
working tirelessly on behalf of their fellow veterans and serving the people of
their communities.”
Gen. Charlie Hamm, who chaired the Congressional Veteran Commendation Review
Board and was a past recipient, presented this year’s commendations on behalf of
Congressman Burgess. Other members of the Review Board and past recipients as
well are Johnnie Bulen, Reby Cary, Thomas Blagg, Woodrow Wilson Burch and Ivan
Glasscock
In addition to recognizing this year’s Congressional Veterans Commendation
recipients, Rep. Burgess presented former Highland Village Mayor Lawrence with
his father’s Congressional Gold Medal for his father’s service with the Tuskegee
Airman. Rep. Burgess also presented the Purple Heart Medal to U.S. Army SPC
Robbie Strauch of Flower Mound in recognition of the wounds he sustained in Iraq
while serving as a member of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
“Thank you again to all the veterans for your service to the United State of
America,” said Rep. Burgess. “On behalf of the citizens of the 26th District and
of a grateful nation, we are forever in your debt.”

Thanks for sharing this, Evelyn!

The National Hymn
- Lyrics by
Daniel C. Roberts, Music by George W. Warren,1888
God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.
Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast,
Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
