Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's edition of the
Newsletter is in honor of my cousin,
Jim Atkinson
(John
Randolph Tucker HS - '77), who just informed me
that he and his family, of their own free will and accord, are leaving the
Sacred Soil of Virginia (where my own heart ever yearns to be) to live in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.

Honey, what are you thinking?!?
Oh, I mean, well, congratulations,
Sweetie, that's delightful! I know y'all will be very happy there!

From My Cousin, Jim Atkinson
(John
Randolph Tucker HS - '77)
of VA - 11/09/07 - "Moving West (Again)":
Hey Cuz,
We're gettin' outta Dodge after the first of the year. Movin' to southwestern
Arizona, bout midway between Tucson and Yuma. Cactus and big rattlers galore,
Ajo that is. Sonoran pronghorns and desert bighorns. Sounds pretty darn
excit'n, huh?
Was offered and accepted a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at
the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge as the Recovery Team Leader for
Sonoran pronghorn antelope. Lots of flying in small planes and heli's, live
capture operations, backcountry operations and who knows, maybe some border
patrol. It's a hefty promotion, too, considering I have about 8 years before I
hit eligibility (retirement). Pretty awesome stuff to follow up 15+ years with
the National Park Service.
Well, I suppose somebody has
to do it - I guess..... I'm
glad you love doing what you're doing
- and even more glad that I don't have to do it!
Thanks, Jim!

Carol,
Are there any photos of the Boys Club that I think was off of 28th Street (is that correct?)? I can remember going there almost every Saturday, playing basketball and making crafts. It was a fun place to hang out.
Glenn Dye { 60 }
You are correct with the location, Glenn. The one you remember was in the 400 block of 28th Street, and we have quite a bit of information - including pictures - on Our Old Stomping Grounds. I've added your comments to that page:

From My Cousin, Jim Atkinson
(John
Randolph Tucker HS - '77)
of VA - 11/11/07 - "Here's a more sanitized version...":
...for your newsletter.
First a link to my new station...
http://www.fws.gov/southwest
I will be the Supervisory Refuge Biologist. My primary
responsibility (at least initially) will be the Recovery Team Leader for the
U.S. endangered Sonoran pronghorn antelope (a subspecies of the familiar
pronghorn) which is only found in southern Arizona and extreme northern Mexico.
Will also have responsibility for all biological programs on the refuge
including desert bighorn sheep and a variety of other desert critters (the
latter category, I will leave to your imagination).
Yes, there are bark scorpions, tarantulas, Arizona coral snakes, Gila monsters
and six rattlesnake species including western diamondback, Mohave and
sidewinder. All a plus in my view. Also cougar, javelina, mule deer and a
plethora of really cool desert plants (particularly, the cacti).
I know this isn't your thing or most other people's for that matter but I'm
motivated by intriguing critters (as I always have been) and have found a way to
get paid for doing what I like. Best of both worlds.
Perhaps most importantly, Jody will be back relatively close to remaining family
(Arizona and California). It's the equal time thing and she sure put in her
time over on this side of the continent. We're excited about the move to say
the least. Yes, it will be unmercifully hot in the summer but, on the other
hand, I will not have to endure any more winter weather. The daytime lows
during January and February average in the 70s - 80s.
More later,
Jim
Okay, Jim - I AM
happy for you, but we'll miss seeing y'all, so stay in touch!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 11/11/07:
At the very least!
WOWZERONI - I should say so!
Absolutely!
If you are searching
for the common denominator in your life, you are in luck. You are it. Now that
you know you are the only consistent factor in any situation, you can begin to
figure out how you are contributing to your recurring challenges and problems.
This is great news because, once you realize you are at least part of the
problem, you can begin to change your behavior, beliefs and attitudes that are
contributing to the situation. Keep in mind that you have to concern yourself
only with you, not with anyone else. You are the only one you can change. So
don’t focus outside yourself. Focus on the common denominator. You will be
amazed at the difference this process will make in your life.
Yeah,
and not only that, but somehow they
always seem to hear it in my voice when I'm laughing so hard when I answer
the phone that I can't seem to produce anything more than crazy muffled wheezing
sounds, too.....
Thanks, Shari!

Norm Covert

Here's a trivia question for you, Dave: How come we
had so many lovely young ladies in the YMCA on 32nd street? One answer might be,
that we only had "lovely young ladies."
Norm ... easy answer: They were there in order to be near the
"handsome young men".

From the President of the Class of
1965, Joe Wingo of NC - 11/12/07:
Hi Carol,
Happy Veterans Day to all of our hero’s both past and present. You make your country proud and we owe you a deep debt of thanks for your sacrifice on our behalf.
Also, to
Jerry Blanchard ('62 - of
VA): Man, I could not agree with your feelings more. That list should be a
sharp reminder of just what principals this country was founded upon and let us
never let them become blurred by political correctness. America may have it’s
problems but I have no hesitancy in saying the USA is still the greatest country
on the face of the earth.
Jerry, you not only did not hurt my feelings, you made my day. I love this list of reminders that we are “One Nation, under God”!
Oooh Rah USA!!
Now, I just may have succeeded in offending someone but I don’t really care because if you do not agree with me you have the freedom to speak out and tell me so. That’s part of what being an American gets you!
Today seems like an appropriate day to restate the obvious…America, love it or leave it!! Far too many good and brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice for us to be anything other than honored, thankful, and proud to be citizens of the United States of America.
Thank you so
much, Joe!

Dear Carol,
My husband,
Mickey (Marcella - 54) wants to know if you will put a note out on the
Typhoon newsletter that on Thanksgiving Day, our NN paper,
the Daily Press, is running an
article and a picture (we believe) about many of the old Typhoons, Crabbers and
Farmers who get together every Tuesday morning for breakfast at the Warwick
Motel Restaurant in NN. This has been going on for years and the details
about it will be in the article. Maybe people can diary their calendars to look
for it on that day. They all really enjoy seeing each other and others that
come to town and stop by since word has gotten around.
Thanks, Carol.
Carol Marcella
WOWZERONI!!! That's delightful!
Of course, I'll carry that announcement - repeatedly - in the Dates to
Remember (below)!
Thanks, Carol - and Mickey!

Arizona
(Official Song of the State of Arizona)
Words by Margaret Rowe Clifford, 1915
Music by Maurice Blumenthal,
Come to this land of sunshine
To this land where life is young.
Where the wide, wide world is waiting,
The songs that will now be sung.
Where the golden sun is flaming
Into warm, white shining day,
And the sons of men are blazing
Their priceless right of way.
chorus
Come stand beside the rivers
Within our valley broad.
Stand here with heads uncovered,
In the presence of our God!
While all around, about us
The brave, unconquered band,
As guardians and landmarks
The giant mountains stand.
chorus
Not alone for gold and silver
Is Arizona great.
But with graves of heroes sleeping,
All the land is consecrate!
O, come and live beside us
However far ye roam
Come and help us build up temples
And name those temples "home."
chorus
Sing the song that's in your hearts
Sing of the great Southwest,
Thank God, for Arizona
In splendid sunshine dressed.
For thy beauty and thy grandeur,
For thy regal robes so sheen
We hail thee Arizona
Our Goddess and our queen.
