Dear Carol:
I really enjoyed the images of the keepsake booklets
we received in elementary school that
Craig (Fred) Eubank supplied. (I always knew
him as Craig!) A mouse got into the box in the attic where I kept all
that stuff, and I was only able to save a few things.
Craig, wasn't the top row left Billy MacDowell?
My memory has faded so much.....but I do remember that he and I used to
laugh about silly things so much it made my stomach hurt. Bottom row is
me,
Sue Miller (Dearnley - '64 - of VA), and
Linda Long ('64).
I remember Mrs. Hamner as being "mean", but
then....weren't they all way back then? My seventh grade teacher, Mrs.
Robinson, was very stern, but I consider her one of the best teachers
I ever had. Sherry Spain and I went to visit her after we had
entered the eighth grade. She said, "When you get to high school, the
most important thing to remember is this: There's always two sides to
every story." Words of wisdom I've never forgotten....

WOW - thanks, Sheila! I added this to the Briarfield School page: |

Hi, Carol:
The
Thanksgiving Day Newsletter sure
brought me great joy seeing
Elizabeth Breeden ('61) of VA has
accepted an invitation to join us on this website. She was one outstanding
Lady TYPHOON athlete. Her older brother,
P. A. Breeden ('56) was an outstanding TYPHOON Basketball
player. Her brother, Granville Breeden enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps after NNHS
and I remember when he returned from Recruit Training at Parris Island,
SC. He came to the Rec Swimming Pool
on his first leave, and I was working that day. I hardly recognized him as
he had grown stronger and taller. A couple of years later we had a nice
"mini-reunion" off Roosevelt Roads, PR when I was serving in USS BOXER
(LPH-4) and Granville was among the embarked Marines from Camp LeJeune, NC
participating in amphibious warfare training on Vieques Island, PR while
on Caribbean Sea patrol. We passed the time away talking about TYPHOON
days in the warm breezes of the Caribbean Sea resting on the Forecastle of
the BOXER.
I sure hope that Elizabeth will convey my warmest
regards to both P. A. and Granville.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
Thanks, Joe!
What a great story! I remember P. A.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 12/24/05 - "Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA -
FAMOUS
SAILORS":
|
Hi, Carol:
I enjoyed reading the account of the news of the
shooting of President John F.
Kennedy by
Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA that reached those serving in USS Iwo
Jima (LPH-2) in the Pacific Ocean and reaction of the people in Taiwan
following the tragedy. May I nominate Jerry for the Famous Sailors page on
your website, please. I am sure he can find a photo in his Navy uniform to
furnish you a copy to meet your rigid, unbending, un-yielding requirements
for that section of your website. Not that you are being "Bratty" or
anything like that...just enforcing standards.
Happy Thanksgiving!
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
I knew that would not be lost on you, Adonis! And no, of course I would
never be bratty!
Even more important than an image, I need Jerry's birth date, birth place, and other occupations for that page. Oh, Jer-ry....... http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/famous-sailors.html Thanks, Joe! |

For the beautiful
Thanksgiving
Newsletter . We had
a delicious dinner with friends and then watched old Red Skelton
shows (on DVD)...the commercials were as funny as the skits...tv was so
innocent then!
By the way I am going to make your Rice in Cream pudding as soon as we clean out the Thanksgiving leftovers (my friend and I shared all the leftover goodies). Love, Jean P. S. I love those Thanksgiving hymns... Thank you, Jean! |

Carol, Here are some pictures I promised to send. The Colonial Hotel and my father’s restaurant, the Colony Restaurant, are shown. You can see in the pictures shipyard workers on their lunch hour lined up waiting to get served. One of the pictures also shows a little bit of one of the Shipyard Apartment Buildings. I am also sending a picture of my father’s first restaurant, the Sanitary Lunch. The picture dates back to the early forties before he expanded into the shoe repair shop next door. My father bought the space and doubled the size of the restaurant. When I was growing up a Mr. Carter and his wife ran another shoe repair shop next door to the restaurant where the Chicago Meat Market had been. (At least I think I remember his name was Mr. Carter.) If you look closely, you can see the trolley tracks on Washington Avenue. I remember riding the trolley down 28th street when I was very young, probably a preschooler. At that time the Greyhound Bus Station was located on the northeast corner of Washington Avenue and 28th across from where we later went to Antine’s. And it seems to me that there was a park on that corner by the bus station, with a fountain in it. Later Grant's Five and Dime store located in that spot while the bus station moved to West Avenue and 26th street. Does anyone else remember a park by the bus station at the corner of Washington Avenue and 28th Street?
I don't remember it, as I
think it was long gone by the time we moved to the Peninsula in January of
1954, but I believe you are referring to Washington Park.

You've just given me the opportunity to wax sentimental over my favorite
section of the website. When I first
returned to the Peninsula in October of 2000 after an absence of many years,
I simply could not reconcile so many places as they presented themselves
with anything I could remember. When
Take care, Carol. |

You've Lost That Loving Feeling
(The Righteous Brothers)
You never close your eyes any more
When I kiss your lips
And there's no tenderness like before
In your fingertips
You're trying hard not to show it baby
But baby, baby I know it
You've lost that loving feeling
Oh, that loving feeling
You've lost that loving feeling
Now it's gone, gone, gone
Whoa-oh
Now there's no tenderness
In your eyes when I reach for you
And girl you're starting to criticize
little things I do
It makes me just feel like crying baby
'Cause baby, something beautiful's dying
You've lost that loving feeling
Oh that loving feeling
Bring back that loving feeling
Now it's gone gone gone
And I can't go on
No-oh-oh
Baby baby I get down on my knees for you
If you would only love me like you used to do
We had a love
A love a love you don't find every day
So don't...don't...don't let it slip away
Bring back that loving feeling
Oh, that loving feeling
Bring back that loving feeling
Now it's gone...gone...gone...
And I can't go on...
No-oh-oh...
