Dear Friends and Schoolmates, 

   We interrupt our regularly scheduled December Newsletters to bring you this special edition requested by     Joe Madagan ('57) of FL on 11/30/07 as a "Musical Appreciation Quiz.":

Hi, Carol:
 
Maybe this question will prompt a theme for one of your future Newsletters to the Typhoon Nation.
 
First off, I do not know the answer to my question and do hope that some genius with a great musical appreciation will identify the musical instrument being played as a solo in this song:

Is it an Oboe or a Tenor Saxophone Duet?
 
Doncha know, it is driving me crazy...or I would not have written to the Typhoon Nation for help!!!
 
Having lost some of my hearing to "Tanker's Ear" I need all the help I can get with this one.
 
Talk about memories...National Airlines flying out of Patrick Henry Airport. When I read your recent Newsletter making reference to National Airlines my mind morphed back to Patrick Henry Airport when we bid farewell to my younger sister Nancy Madagan Van Orden ('61) of FL as she left to report to Vietnam for duty as a Department of Defense civilian employee. Seems like yesterday when a strong emotion is triggered by memory of just a name. I can still see the insignia trade mark on the tail of that aircraft as it left Newport News.
 
Well, hope you like the suggestion for a musical theme, since it is a beautiful melody.

Yep, we're related and didn't know it 'til your great work struck again in June, publishing her Dad's memorial site and obituary. As you can see in the picture, we both have the same genes -- we've both got blond/silver hair. My Grandaddy Clifford Goodson of Troy, Fluvanna County, VA, was 6-4 or better, her Grandaddy Lumon Marie Goodson, also of Troy, apparently was not as tall.

We recently had a great time together [with her son Devan and my wife Loretta (Ludwigsburg American HS '68)] covering the years of not knowing each other, while dining sumptuously at Cracker Barrel. She met Mother,    Betsy Goodson Covert (June '37, MD), who told her stories about Lumon Marie, Grandma Lois and their farm. I love corn bread, but still choked a bit on it. That's my Grandma's genes. Can't share everything.

   Wait a minute! I missed something here! I thought y'all just didn't realize that you lived so near one another in Maryland that you could easily visit after lo, these many years! I didn't realize that y'all didn't know you were cousins!!! WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI!!!

   By the way, your mama has beautiful blue eyes!!!

We will gather in the private dining room for drinks and conversation at 6pm (cash bar) and order dinner at 7PM.  Kippe said she can handle individual orders so each of us can order from the menu and handle our bill and gratuity on a personal basis.
 
We will need for you to RSVP to me via email with names so I can give Mike and Kippe a count.

Carol,

You are an amazing person. I had almost forgotten about tonight being the first night of Chanukah, and then I lit the candles after reading your your web message. My wife is a Danish Lutheran, and we do celebrate all the holidays in our own traditions, with many people of mixed religions, etc.
 
And now we are reminded by a dedicated LDS of our own faiths. G-d bless you.
 
I did know Harold Abraham, and his wife Thelma, and her brother Robert. I grew up with Robert in Newport News, and knew the Abraham family quite well, as my Aunt Ida Satisky's father was also an Abraham related to that very family. Harold's father and Ida's father were brothers. They, as I remember, slaughtered beef in the Jewish/Kosher tradition for many generations of Jews on the Peninsula, and I remember them well, as my father was close to Harold, Phillip, and Elliot Abraham and their father. My dad, Aaron Satisky, managed the restaurant, as a franchise, at Nachman's from around 1946 until his death in 1954, at the age of 46.

Many of my classmates NNHS class of 1956 remember my father well. His closest friend was the near immortal   Julie Conn, with whom he grew up in Newport News.

I have attended every reunion of our class, even though I often traveled distances to get there, from Ft. Ord, California when I was a young Infantry officer for the 10th, until last year for our 50th. Twice I got the award as coming the most distance (we live in Lake Oswego, OR). I still think so fondly of my classmates and really like to see them, and many of us are dying off.  G-d willing we will do our reunion again in two more years. Both my sister and I went from Woodrow Wilson School to NNHS, but 11 years apart. What a great memory we both have of growing up in Newport News. Franki ('68) now lives just a mile from my wife and me here in Oregon, and last night we celebrated her 58th birthday.
