...is one of the songs we are singing at Blythewold on
Sunday. Blythewold is a mansion in
Bristol, Â RI, not far from here. We are singing our cantata in
church and then having a party at our choir director's house in the
afternoon.
By the way, have you guessed my third favorite Christmas hymn??? I will tell you tomorrow! Love, Jeanb Okay, Lady, lemme see. I get three guesses, right?? And I'm thinking that if Once in Royal David's City is your favorite Christmas carol, and Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming is your second favorite, then your third favorite is going to be equally as unusual. Okay, I'm gonna start with O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Thanks, Jean!
You guessed wrong...but that is my favorite ADVENT Hymn!!! You get two more guesses. Ahhh - okay, how about All My Heart This Night Rejoices?
No, not that either. But it's not terribly obscure; it's in the Methodist Hymnal. AHA!!! I still have my copy! I'll check it; it's on the tip of my tongue. I will give you a hint...it is a poem. Isn't this fun? YEPPERS!!!
Well, wouldn't you
know?!? I moved my Hymnal, so
I've gone to the Methodist Hymnal online. I'd forgotten how many great
carols it contained. 229. Infant Holy, Infant LowlyHere's another: 221. In the Bleak Midwinter

From Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64) of VA - 12/14/06 - "from
long-lost cousin - Cheryl":
The Price of Children
I have seen the breakdown of the cost of raising a child, but this is the first
time I have seen the rewards listed this way.
The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18
and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk
about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition.
But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into:
* $8,896.66 a year,
* $741.38 a month, or
* $171.08 a week.
* That's a mere $24.24 a day!
* Just over a dollar an hour.
Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children if you
want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you get for your
$160,140?
* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how
your stocks performed that day.
For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:
* finger-paint,
* carve pumpkins,
* play hide-and-seek,
* catch lightning bugs, and
* never stop believing in Santa Claus.
You have an excuse to keep:
* reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
* watching Saturday morning cartoons,
* going to Disney movies, and
* wishing on stars.
* You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and
collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand
prints set in clay or Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's
Day.
For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just
for:
* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
* taking the training wheels off a bike,
* removing a splinter,
* filling a wading pool,
* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never
wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.
You get a front row seat to history to witness the:
* first step,
* first word,
* first bra,
* first date, and
* first time behind the wheel.
You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if
you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and
great grandchildren. You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal
justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.
In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the
power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken
heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without
limits. So, one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost. That
is quite a deal for the price!!!!!!!
Well, "Hello, dere,
Lady!"
Long time, no talkie!
Thanks for this selection - "I just loved it"! Oh no, that's, "You'll just love it!", isn't it?!? WILD GIGGLES!!!
Kiss your mama and daddy for
me - and give them extra birthday kisses, too!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 12/14/06 - "Wet Pants - (GOOD ONE)":
... this is too nice not to pass on.
WET PANTS
Come with me to a third grade classroom.....
There is a nine-year-old kid sitting at his desk and all of a sudden, there is a
puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart
is going to stop because he cannot possibly imagine how this has happened. It's
never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out he will never
hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they'll never speak to him again as
long as he lives.
The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and prays
this prayer, "Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from
now I'm dead meat."
He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes
that says he has been discovered.
As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a
goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and
inexplicably dumps the bowl of water in the boy's lap.
The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, "Thank
you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!"
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the
object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym shorts
to put on while his pants dry out. All the other children are on their hands and
knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would
have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone
else - Susie.
She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. You've done enough, you klutz!"
Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks
over to Susie and whispers, "You did that on purpose, didn't you?"
Susie whispers back, "I wet my pants once too."
May God help us see the opportunities that are always around us to do good.
Remember.....Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than
standing in your garage makes you a car.
I only hope that in the coming years there will be many people with fish bowls
around me!!!
Oh, I really liked
this one, Shari! Thanks so much!

Angels We Have Heard on High
Traditional
French carol (Les Anges dans Nos Campagnes);
translated from French to English by James Chadwick in Crown of Jesus, 1862.
In Great Britain, often set to the tune of the French noël
Les Anges dans nos Campanges
Music: "Gloria" (or "Iris"), arr. Edward Shippen Barnes
Angels we have heard on high,
Singing sweetly through the night,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their brave delight.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why these songs of happy cheer?
What great brightness did you see?
What glad tiding did you hear? Refrain
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord, the new-born King. Refrain
See him in a manger laid
Whom the angels praise above;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While we raise our hearts in love. Refrain
