12/29/04 - NNHS Newsletter - I Will Survive! |

"I am not making this up." - Dave Barry |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
I wasn't
planning to release another Newsletter until New Year's Eve, but there has been
so much mail it will never hold that long.
Much of it is so embarrassingly self-serving I feel obliged to report that I
bribed none of these people to say these nice things.

From Janice McCain Rose
('65) of VA (one of our original handful of subscribers - and one of my oldest
friends!)
- 12/28/04:
Buckwheat dawlin’…..I, too, wanted to let you know that the job you are doing with the NNHS site is MOST appreciated!!
I look forward every day to reading the
latest about our fellow Typhoons…..and I agree with the others….it’s YOUR
domain…
and you certainly can say and do anything you please.

I’m also enclosing a snowy scene taken from
our front door…..I think we got about 4 ˝ to 5 inches of snow….quite a dusting
(as the local weather jerks predicted!)
Happy New Year to YOU and all the fellow Typhoons….2005 will be a big year for us……40th reunion….and I can’t wait.
Janice
Thanks, Janice!
I always love to hear from you. It reminds me somehow of the notes we used
to pass to each other in school!
How delightful it's been for me to have been reconnected with you for the past
five years! I still think it's a very remarkable thing!
Thanks for the image, too. Yes, ma'am, that is certainly some "dusting"! GIGGLES!!! Happy New Year!

From Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA - 12/28/04:
Carol .... in reference to the Tankar page, the
address for the downtown NN one was 755-25th Street. I found no listing
for any others in either the 52 or 60 city directories. Tankar was based in
Virginia and yes, the marketing niche was
building the station into the side of an actual tank car, but early stations
were not built that way. I have pictures of one
in Lynchburg without the tank, and ones in Norfolk and Portsmouth with.
Unfortunately I have none from the Peninsula.
Awww... Thanks anyway, Babe - and Happy New Year!

From Tim Parsons ('73) of VA - 12/28/04:
Tim sent me ten images, primarily from a 1951 Anchor - so cool! And of those ten, I've posted, uh, one.....

Now if people would quit interrupting me around her, I might get those others posted sometime soon!
Thanks, Tim - Happy New Year!

From Several Readers over the last few weeks:
I read and enjoy your NNHS
site and wish to donate to it but do not like the Pay Pal method, as I've had
a bad experience in past. Can I send you the check to your home instead?
Yes, of course! Sending a check to my home is perfectly fine with me – delightful, in fact!
My address is: Carol Buckley
Harty
219 Four Ply Lane
Fayetteville, NC 28311-9305
I opened the Pay Pal account for your convenience, and to save you postage.
Hey - I wouldn't even mind if you deposited
it directly into my checking account!
WILD GIGGLES!!
Seriously, thanks so much. I truly appreciate your financial support.

From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 12/28/04:
Okay, Ronnie - you're on! Thanks - and Happy New Year!

From Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA - 12/28/04:
As I failed so miserably in trying to answer your last letter, I’ll try to do better with this one.
WOWZERONI!!!
That’s the most incredible
small world story I’ve heard yet!!! I’m sure I have Lou and Sarah’s phone
number somewhere. I do
know that Larry Armstrong ('53) is in
Annapolis – and he played center on the football team and was quite a star, but
I misspoke
earlier when I assured you that he was the Captain. The Co-Captains that
year were Pete Sachon and Ronnie Jenkins.
Jimmy Smith (’62) sent
me that T-shirt about three years ago. I believe he said he got it from Bob
Stalnaker’s ('64) shop. I’m
not sure what that is, of course! Maybe Bobby Hilling (’62) at Trophy
World could tell you something....
You did a beautiful job of thanking me, really! I’m in such a wonderful position. I do what I love, and find that others enjoy it as well.
Tell Anne hi for me. I started to forward your note to Miss Sarah, but I didn’t want to spoil your surprise! WOW!
Thanks again!

Again from Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA - 12/28/04:
Oh, this just gets better and better, Bobby!
I did forward the whole story to Sarah Sugah. She must be out playing in the snow, as I've not heard back from her.
Thanks for that last tidbit, Bobby! Happy New Year!

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 12/28/04:
Please don't let anyone steal
the joy of your labor with the newsletter,
for it is now a joy to all of us and there is much love out
here for you and your efforts.
Big girls don't cry, but you had me in tears at
the reunion and if someone can't
understand
that, then they must have gone to a different school or if they did they just
don't get it.
Ah, Bill - you're choking me up again! Thank you for all your sweet words! All my labor is always a joy!
I had you in
tears??? Wow - I don't remember that part. Come to think of it,
I really don't remember what I said in that presentation.
I was too nervous to be aware of much of anything.....
And now for True
Confessions. I caught the Kahlil Gibran quotation, but your five, two, and
three percenter references have me
totally stumped. Let's see. I would hope that I use two or three
pent of my brain, at least at times. No, I don't think that's what you
mean. Hmmm. Maybe it's a time question. Two or three percent
of my time is devoted to .... um, sleep? No, even I get more than
that. Thinking? No, that's bad business. All the trouble I
ever encountered in the world began with my thinking something or other.
Umm ... I still have a hunch it may be a question of time ... Oh, I give up.
What is it???
Thanks again, Bill - and Happy New Year!

From Harron Ellenson ('65) of MA - 12/28/04:
Dear Carol:
At this time when one year changes to the next all of us are not just thinking
of the past 12 months but
of the many months that have passed in all our lives.
I want to thank you for not just thinking of yourself, but of all of us and the
many memories we share. Some
of these memories are bittersweet, maybe some even bitter, but so many are
sweet. Most of all, you are
making us remember what has shaped us to be the people we are today.
Thank you for your work, for your ever positive attitude, and for your standing
up for what you believe.
Happy New Year.
Harron
(Oh, my! I'm choking up again. Maybe it's my sinuses. No, I do not believe so..... )
Thank you so much, Harron. It has
been an incredible journey - or two journeys, really: the Living and the
Remembering.
I truly appreciate your words right now. They affected me quite deeply.
Happy New Year, Harron!

From Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA - 12/28/04:
Hi all ...
Based on my trusty Amoco road map, circa 1960, the
section of 258 that ran through NN between the
James River
Bridge and the Hampton city line was
also called Military Road.
Take care ...
Tom
AHA!!! Thanks, Babe!

From Brian Beachum ('72) of VA - 12/28/04:
Carol,
Your energy you put into
the NNHS newsletter is always amazing.
You're the "Energizer Bunny" of web
eletters. I came across a real Typhoon Trivia item the other day and thought I'd
share it with you.
Did you know there was a Typhoon SUV? Yep. In
the early 90's, GMC produced a limited edition high-
performance 2-door SUV called the Typhoon. It had Typhoon embossed in the bucket
seats and emblazed
on the back tailgate. The SUV was a real blast, with a reported 150mph top speed
from the factory! That's
almost as fast as the Typhoon football team used to run and score against the
Crabbers.
What a vehicle for a die-hard Typhoon fan.
I've seen a few on eBay Motors. From what I've read, they only
produced about 2500 of them. I wonder if any Typhoon out there has one? I'm
currently looking for one.
Take care and keep 'dem newsletters comin'...
Brian
WOWZERS! Thanks, Brian!
No, I've surely never heard of this before, but it sounds like fun! "Anyone, anyone?"
Happy New Year, Brian!

From Dale Parsons, Jr. ('69) of HI - 12/28/04:
(That clunking sound you hear is me falling on the floor...)
Oh, my
goodness! Thank you so much, Dale! What a great letter! I'm
completely floored; I hardly know how to respond, except
to say "thank you."
I firmly believe
we all seem somehow to find the time to do those things which are truly
important to us. My problem is that too
many things seem to be important to me, but that certainly beats the
alternative!
Happy New Year, Dale!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 12/29/04:
A Typhoon Milestone:
OK, this is an event which should not go
unreported:
I was touched and delighted when a donation check was received some time ago
from HP Lucas, NNHS '65, but ......
Today, a donation to the Treasury of the NNHS Class of 1964
was made
by Tom Norris, Hampton High School Class of 1973.
While he sent the check following his receipt of the 40TH Reunion Mix
5-CD Set, it was completely voluntary and qualifies
as an unsolicited donation.
I can't speak for the rest of the Alumni, but I consider Tom an "Honorary
Typhoon".
Dave
WOWZERS!!! What can I tell you, Dave ------ Tom's Da Babe!!!
Happy New Year, David - and Tom!

I Will Survive
First I was afraid, I was petrified!
Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong,
and I grew strong, and I learned how to get along.
And so you're back from outer space,
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I shoulda changed that stupid lock, I shoulda made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me.
Go on now, go, walk out the door.
Just turn around now, 'cause you're not welcome anymore.
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
You think I'd crumble? You think I'd lie down and die?
Oh, no, not I! I will survive!
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive.
I've got all my life to live,
And I've got all my love to give,
I'll survive, I will survive!
Hey hey..
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart,
And tryin' hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart.
And I spent, oh, so many nights just feelin' sorry for myself, I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high,
And you'll see me, somebody new;
I'm not that chained up little girl who's still in love with you.
So you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free,
But now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me,
Go on now go, walk out the door.
Just turn around now, cause you're not welcome anymore.
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
You think I'd crumble? You think I'd lay down and die?
Oh, no, not I! I will survive!
Oh, as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive,
I've got all my life to live,
And I've got all my love to give,
I'll survive, I will survive!
Oh..
Go on now, go, walk out the door.
Just turn around now, 'cause you're not welcome anymore.
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
You think I'd crumble? You think I'd lie down and die?
Oh, no, not I! I will survive!
Oh, as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive,
I've got all my life to live,
And I've got all my love to give,
I'll survive, I will survive!
I'll survive
