Dave, if you are heading to Fort
Monroe at Old Point Comfort anytime soon to pursue the old
Sherwood Inn
that was on the base, kindly take a photo of the Armed Forces "Y"
so it can be added to Our Old
Stomping
Grounds as part of the
Fort Monroe page. Sometime back, I wrote a long electronic
missive to our
esteemed Webmistress recalling some great times
as a TYPHOON enjoying this facility with its heated
indoor swimming pool and gym. The TYPHOON and Krabbas used to have some great
basketball
games on that old court. Guys like Paul Cowling and
Bee Becouveracous from Hampton would show us
their stuff when they took on the guys from "Newpert News" in a game of buckets.
I believe it is important
to prove to Carol that this facility really existed before she will consider
using the material.

It's not that I don't believe you, Sweetie; it's just that I'm a lazy bum. If an image or two exists for a page,
I'm not required to think. Thinking is totally against my principles. It's usually painful. Generally speaking,
by the time I actually have such an idea, I've forgotten why I wanted it. And you've caught me at my
laziest season, particularly where thinking is involved....

Funny you should ask for a photo of the Y at Fort Monroe. An old post card with an image just
came up on EBay. And, as I was saving it to my HD, I found another one I already had.
That will have to do until I can get there and capture a current image.

See, Joe, I'm not always stubborn! Okay, well, maybe I am
always stubborn, but I'm not always unreasonable!
Great timing, and thanks for your message. Please do not run the risk of arrest and detention taking
a photo on government property, which I completely overlooked in my zeal when writing earlier making
the request of a photo. It would be too embarrassing to see a retired Navy Captain being shuffled off
into a Military Police vehicle on the evening news. I am sure Carol will be convinced this fine
structure and outstanding facility existed at Fort Monroe. Well, maybe not since she can put us some
stiff resistance in the face of almost overwhelming odds.

Boy, those images overwhelmed me, as I have not seen those old buildings in such a very long time now.
Thank you for sharing them with me. You did a brilliant job of matching the postcards of old with the current digital image of the buildings at Fort Monroe.
I would almost be willing to bet that Carol no longer has my missive regarding the Old Stomping Grounds contribution I submitted some time ago.
The indoor swimming pool and the inside basketball gym at this "Y" afforded us a chance to play basketball and swim during the winter months and off season of basketball. We used to play "make up games" with a lot of the Hampton Crabber basketball players who visited this fine facility.
It kept me in fine shape swimming, so I would be ready to go to work when the "Rec" swimming pool opened for the summer. I did the swimming to stay in condition, but little did I know back then that one admirer (Kathy Pilgrim Clark - '63) thought of me as an "Adonis" and that came as a shock after so many years, and I still get a kick out of it.
Moreover, the "Y" was a place where hungry young Civil Air Patrol, USAF Auxiliary Cadets could find some inexpensive snack food after attending weekly meetings held at Fort Monroe. The CAP also kept their aircraft at Fort Monroe so it was one of the Old Stomping Grounds for Harry Covert, Fred Hayman, Russell Gary Stephenson, and me when we would go flying on weekends. The CAP provided Search and Rescue missions and we were Observers and trained there. Our meals were often taken at this Armed Forces YMCA, so it has a special place in my memory of our youth.
