I was paying a brief visit to the Peninsula this past weekend to celebrate
my mother's 98th birthday and I happened to notice that the Conn-Madden
Relays were taking place.
Of course those relays weren't around when I or we were in
NNHS because both
Julie Conn and Thad Madden were still coaching us local high school
kids. But there were the Norfolk-Virginian Pilot Relays. So I thought I
would send a clipping from the1960 Relays.
There were local high schools running relays and
invitational events and they also brought in some big name Olympic talent.
The 1960 Relays featured pole vaulter Don Bragg and sprinter Dave Sime, both
Olympic athletes. The 'big' stars brought in the crowds but the local
headlines were two Peninsula stars, NNHS shot putter Don Carroll '60 and WHS
high jumper George Leonard '60, both setting meet records.

Running Scared
(Roy Orbison)
Just running scared, each
place we go.
So afraid that he might show.
Yeah, running scared, what would I do
If he came back, and wanted you?
Just running scared, feeling low.
Running scared. You loved him so.
Just running scared, afraid to lose.
If he came back, which one would you choose?
Then, all at once, he was standing there.
So sure of himself, his head in the air.
My heart was breaking. Which one would it be?
You turned around and walked away with me.
