In my father’s attic I found an old copy of the “Counselor,” the blue handbook that all NNHS eighth graders received in Guidance Class.
I copied some of the cheers that I remember so fondly to send to you. Perhaps you already have these for the website, but in case
you don’t, here they are. I sent the copy of the Counselor to the NNHS “archivist,”
  Fred Mays ('60 - of VA).

Here are the cheers I copied from the Counselor. These were the cheers that we used when I was a student at NNHS 1954-1959.

Strawberry shortcake,
Huckleberry pie.
V-I-C-T-O-R-Y
Are we in it?
Well, I guess!
Newport News High School
Yes, yes, yes!

Jump on the bandstand,
Bang on the tin can.
Who can?  We can!
Nobody else can.
Newport News, Rah!

Ice cream soda,
Ginger ale pop;
Newport News High School is always on top!
You can stand them on their head;
You an stand them on their feet;
But Newport News High School
Can’t be beat!

What us go?
Us got a lot,
Us got a team that’s red hot.
V-I-C-T-O-R-Y
That spells victory
For Newport High!

Beat me, daddy, eight to the bar,
Maury High ain’t going very far.
Scrub me, mamma, with a boogie beat,
Come on Newport, Turn on the heat!

How do you like your oysters?
Raw. Raw.
How do you like your cabbage?
Slaw, slaw.
How do you like your sugar?
Sweet. Sweet.
How do you like Hampton?
Beat. Beat.

The team is in a huddle;
The Captain lowers his head.
They all got together,
And this is what they said.
“You gotta F- I G-H-T
You gotta F-I-G-H-T
You gotta F-I-G-H-T
You gotta fight with all your might;
You gotta fight, fight, fight."

You’ve got to click your heels,
And clap your hands,
All you people in the stands.
You’ve got to snap your fingers,
And stamp your feet,
'Cause Maury High is gonna get beat!

Be True to Your School

(Beach Boys)

 When some loud braggart tries to put me down
And says his school is great
I tell him right away
Now what’s the matter buddy
Ain’t you heard of my school
It’s number one in the state

So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school

I got a letterman’s sweater
With a letter in front
I got for footbal and track
I’m proud to where it now
When I cruise around
The other parts of the town
I got a decal in back

So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school

On Friday we’ll be jacked up on the football game
And I’ll be ready to fight
We’re gonna smash ’em now
My girl will be working on her pom-poms now
And she’ll be yelling tonight

So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school

Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
