I love looking at the old
Beacon images but something really caught my eye (in the 02/21/64 issue)
of an event that I have never forgotten-an article on the death of Russell
Maynard ('61). He died from a car accident when his car hit a tree. I was
with some friends and we were the first ones to come across the wreck. I
remember coming around a bend in the road and wondering why there was a car
on its side up against a tree with the lights on and the engine running. We
stopped immediately and the guys told us girls to stay in the car while they
checked it out. They came back to the car and said there was a guy in bad
shape and they didn't think he was going to make it. They were visibly
shaken and I was so glad that I stayed in the car. The next day I found out
it was Russell Maynard and I really freaked because I knew him and have
always thought that if I had seen him that maybe I could have comforted him
and at least he could have seen a familiar face as he died instead of
strangers. There are things/events in your life that you will always
remember--this is one of mine. - Jo Ann
Stewart ('64) of Northern VA - 04/23/08 While reading the comments by Jo Ann Stewart ('64) of (Northern) VA regarding the fatal accident of Russell Maynard, it reminded me of Russell's wonderful sense of humor. Russell worked for Peninsula Funeral Home while attending NNHS back when they were located in the East End section of the City of Newport News. Russell invited my younger sister Nancy Madagan Van Orden ('61) of FL to the prom or maybe it was a school dance, and she accepted and the real surprise was when Russell showed up to pick her up driving a big black hearse which he borrowed from his employer. The young man did have a good sense of humor. Of course, I was not around to witness this event, but it sure has been told and retold for our family held Russell in high esteem and it was a memorable event.
