Joyce Benton Bowden
SURRY - Joyce Benton Bowden passed away on Monday,
Aug. 4, 2003, at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas. A native
of Newport News, she was a resident of Surry County for the past 11 years. She
retired from CEBAF on medical disability in 1994. Prior to retirement, she was
the general manager at several hotels in the Newport News, Hampton and
Williamsburg area. Mrs. Bowden was preceded in death by her mother, Anna T.
Benton, and grandmother, Katherine R. Young. She is survived by her husband of
39 years, Royce Bowden; her children, Todd Bowden and his wife, Lisa, of
Poquoson and Alan Bowden and his wife, Kim, of Fairfax; her beloved
grandchildren, Royce, Jeannine and Christopher; her sister, Catherine Ann Worth
of Hampton, and two brothers, Donald L. Benton of Richmond and Harry E. Benton
of Hampton; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her spirit and courage through
the last 12 years will forever serve as an inspiration to her family and
friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at
Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday
at Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, officiated by the Rev. James D.
Thomas. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground
Blvd., Suite 154, Newport News, VA 23606.

have heard a lot of wonderful things about her from Kathy Tunno. We know she
