Miles Bruce Spigel

Dear Friend of Bruce,
This is Spencer Padgett, Bruce's son-in-law.  Unfortunately I must inform you that Bruce passed away at 2:45 today, Saturday, February 14, 2004 after a long battle with cancer.  His daughter, Melody, was at his side when he passed.  There will be a service for Bruce at 10am on Tuesday the 17th at the Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News.  A graveside service will follow.  Bruce lived a wonderfully fulfilling life and was an inspiration to his entire family.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Miles Bruce Spigel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died at Sentara Bayside Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004. Bruce lived life to the fullest and never missed an opportunity to bring joy to the lives of others. A restaurant owner, manager, and entrepreneur, Bruce worked to live and share everything with those around him. His zest for life and radiant smile were his hallmarks and they will be missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol A. Spigel. Bruce is survived by his daughter, Melody Padgett and her husband, Spencer; his son, Victor Spigel; his two grandsons, Charlie and Sheldon, for whom he had adoring love; and his very significant other, Lynn Engle. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Peninsula Funeral Home by Rabbi Gilah Dror. Burial will follow in Rosenbaum Memorial Park, Hampton. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Blvd., Suite 154, Newport News, VA 23606, or to the Leroy M. Spigel Early Childhood Education Fund, 2700 Spring Road, Newport News, VA 23606, or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

My deepest sympathy to Bruce's family for your loss.  I knew Bruce from childhood, growing up in Newport News and hanging out at his Father's clothing store.  Lots of fond memories of a friendly kid who always had a big smile and a warm heart.  May his memory be a blessing.

My most heart felt condolences to the family and friends. I didn't know Bruce beyond brief meetings when I was a child. But I am thankful for the friend I have, Victor, who Bruce brought in to the world with Carol.

I just returned from the services for Bruce.  His son-in-law, Spencer, delivered a wonderful tribute to Bruce and all the lives he touched over the years.  When he commented on "that big smile that filled a room", it brought back Bruce's love of people and willingness to help everyone he knew.  I think that smile is what many of us will remember about Bruce from our years in school.  We can take comfort in the fact Bruce is no longer in pain, and resting peacefully.

I have so many happy memories of Bruce, both at Newport News High School and later at Old Dominion. Above all, I remember his gentle, fun-loving spirit, and that great million-dollar smile. I added another image of that smile to the NNHS web site "In Memoriam – Class of 1965" page early this morning.
For some time now I had planned to order a copy of Bruce’s cook book from his Bruskys web page this very week. I did order that cook book yesterday as planned. It just won’t be the autographed copy that I had so wanted.

Bruce and I were friends all through high school, graduating in the same class.  Many hours were spent in each others homes.  We also shared an apartment in Norfolk during our freshman year at Old Dominion.  Bruce could always be counted on for a big smile and lots of laughs, and was always there when a friend was needed.  He did touch so many people and made each life a bit brighter, and we'll miss him.

To the family of Bruce Spigel - I remember Bruce from NNHS and his uncle's store.  I was in the class of 1962.  Even as a child Bruce always had a big smile and was so kind and nice to everyone.  It was a pleasure to have known him.  My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Bruce was a gentleman and I'll always remember his efforts and kindness in support of our cross country and track teams at NNHS.  He would always go out of his way to help you. Although I have not seen him for years I'll always remember his gentle spirit.
