Carl W. Nettles Jr.
YORKTOWN -
Carl W. Nettles Jr., 65, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2004. He was employed
as a model technician at Allied Aerospace for 27 years and was a member of First
Baptist Church, Newport News. Building and flying radio controlled airplanes was
a passionate hobby and he did it with the same enthusiasm as he did life. He was
a member of the Isle of Wight Radio Control Club and had been an active member
of the Newport News Park Radio Control Club, since its inception in early 1990.
Since 1999, he had been in charge of field maintenance for the Newport News Club
and was instrumental in making the flying field what it is today. According to
club members, he was the 'heart and soul' of the club. He was reliable,
dependable and gave much of himself. One of the things he was most known for was
his unique airplanes, such as the 'Flying Lawnmower' and he attracted quite a
crowd when he flew it. He was loved by all who knew him and never had an unkind
word to say about anyone. He also loved to travel with his wife, especially
cruising. He could dance all night and play all day, living life to its fullest.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Williams Nettles; two sons, Scott Nettles and
wife, Teresa, of Hampton and Carlton Nettles and wife, Suzi, of Tennessee;
daughter, Cynthia Palamino of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Kay Gardner and
husband, Abe, of Hampton; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The
family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral
Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at
the funeral home with Dr. K. Randel Everett officiating. Interment will follow
in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made
to the American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Blvd., Suite 154, Newport
News, VA 23606.

| Carl will be
missed by all of his friends at NNPRCC. His leadership and willingness to
take on a job no one else wanted went a long way to making the club what it
is today. Good flying Carl! Now your batteries will always be charged, your fuel tanks full, and the skies always blue. |
