Frank, 93, a resident of Newport News from 1938-1997, died in Baltimore on Dec.
29, 2003. Fleeing from the Nazis, he settled in Newport News with the assistance
of Marie Schmidt Helvering, who had emigrated several years earlier from his
hometown in the Rhinepfalz, Germany. Mr. Frank 'always appreciated the freedom
and opportunities that the United States offered,' said his daughter Ellen
Lightman, of Baltimore. Mr. Frank along with his wife Selma Dreifus Frank owned
Franks' Market in the East End of Newport News during the 1940's–50's and was
active in real estate until his move to Baltimore. He was a member of Adath
Jeshurun Congregation for nearly six decades. In addition to his wife and
daughter he is survived by another daughter, Judy Stieglitz of New York, and
sons-in-law, Dr. Noah Lightman and Richard Stieglitz; a sister, Irma Gideon and
a brother Max Frank of New York; four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Sol Levinson & Bros.,
