SMITHFIELD - Jerry Stuart Gary, 59, of Smithfield,
formerly of Newport News, died at his residence on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. Jerry
worked on the Peninsula and was the former owner of Hampton Nissan and has been
in the automotive business 44 years. He had a love for race cars and
motorcycles. He especially loved taking care of his grandson, Cody, who was the
joy of his life and was known by Cody as 'Grandy.' Jerry was a dear husband,
father, brother and friend to many and will be truly missed by all. He was
preceded in death by his mother, Adelaide M. Gary, and his father, Harry A.
Gary. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Betty Cooper Gary; two
sons, Jerry S. Gary Jr. and his wife, Shari Whitmore Gary, of Smithfield and
Jeffrey Warren Gary and his wife, Crystal Knowles Gary, and one grandson, Cody
Warren Gary, all of Hampton; five brothers, Charles D. Gary, Harry A. Gary Jr.,
Forrest J. Gary, Roscoe A. Gary and Warren C. Gary; four sisters, Adelaide M.
Raymond, Harryette A. Thomas, Mary Ellen VanZant and Carolyn F. Gary; and
numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on
Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be
conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home by the Rev. Clarence
Hillings. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
