James F. Carter Jr.
 

HAMPTON - James F. Carter Jr., 86, a native of Halifax, Va., and a resident of Hampton since the mid 1940's, died Friday, May 14, 2004. After graduating from high school, Jim entered the Army Air Corps in 1937 and graduated from the Casey Jones Aviation School of Aeronautics as an aviation mechanic. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. After retiring from a career in the Air Force, Mr. Carter served as head custodian at Newport News High School for several years, and then entered the civil service before retiring in 1983. Jim, a spirited soul, was known for his big smile and generosity toward those in need. He enjoyed going for walks and could be seen over the years returning errant shopping carts at Todd Center to their rightful positions. Jim was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Townes, two sisters and one brother. Jim leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 58 years, Jean Carter; one daughter, Margaret Altman and her husband, Wayne, of Smithfield; two sons, Edward Carter and his wife, Valerie, of Chesapeake, and James Carter III and his wife, Mary Jo, of Hampton; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Bethany United Methodist Church, Todd's Lane. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church at P.O. Box 905, Halifax, VA 24558, or the Alzheimer's Assoc., 29 Interstate Corp. Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton.
