Ann, wife of     Joe Wingo's ('65 - of NC) friend, Brett - request of 03/05/09 - "facing breast cancer with surgery scheduled for 03/26/09":

  Jerry Allen ('65) of VA - update of 07/25/08 - SEE: 07/25/08;  - update of 07/28/08 - "Jerry's HOME!!! He is ... feeling much better. He will still have to tackle some health issues, but we are getting there!";
update of 03/30/09 - SEE: 04/01/09; update of 04/15/09 - SEE: 04/15/09; update of 04/16/09 - SEE: 04/18/09; update of 05/05/09 - SEE: 05/06/09; update of 06/05/09 - SEE: 06/05/09; update of 06/21/09 - SEE: 06/22/09;

Judy's Niece, Courtney - SEE: 10/23/08

  Lois Ashworth Simms, wife of     Al Simms ('60) of VA - request of 11/15/08 - "Please add my wife Lois to your prayer list as she has been diagnosed with and is being treated for breast cancer. It was caught very early, less than one cm tumor on a routine mammogram and has already been removed via lumpectomy and next week she will have a new state of the art radiation treatment, Mammosite, that treats the area of the tumor with radiation from inside the cavity created by removal of the tumor. This may be followed by chemo but that is not decided with certainty yet. Her lymph nodes were clear as was a margin of tissue around the tumor and so we believe that she is probably already cancer free and the follow-up radiation and possibly chemo too are just to make sure. Please pray that she is cancer free and that the treatment that she will have next week is really as side-effect free as they say that it is."

  Johnnie Bateman ('70) of VA - request of 02/06/09 - "having surgery on Monday, 1/9/09, at Riverside for an abdominal aortic aneurysm"; update of 04/19/09 - "back at work and is a lot better";

    Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of VA \  - request of 06/24/09 - "I recently had an abnormal stress test, and therefore I'm having a heart catheterization tomorrow.   I know that prayer works, as Dale's miraculous recovery is proof of that.  I'm very nervous about it, so please keep me and my family in your positive thoughts and prayers.  I will update everyone as soon as I'm able to.  Thanks so much for being such wonderful friends"; update of 07/01/09 - SEE: 07/01/09

  Betty Brockwell McClure ('58) of VA - broken hip - early this year; still recovering and in pain; update of 06/17/08 - SEE: 06/18/08; update of 08/29/08 - "I was going to suggest that you remove me from the Prayer List, since I had become pain free.  However, two weeks ago, I carried a 25-pound bag of cat litter into the house, and since that time, I've been in quite a lot of pain again.  So stooopid of me!  I am so thankful for and send love to anyone who's been praying for me.  I know how much it helps."; update of 03/25/09 - SEE: 03/26/09;

Dale Chestnut (Nakina HS, NC - '54) of VA suffered heart attack on 07/25/08, fell on sidewalk during attack, breaking his nose and cheekbone and losing a tooth; is in critical condition in Mary Immaculate ICU; update of 08/04/08 - SEE 08/04/08; update of 08/19/08 - "at home recuperating"; update of 08/29/08 - SEE: 09/01/08

  My Friend, Judy Cress Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '58), of IL - update of 10/02/08 - "I went to see my orthopedic surgeon and found out my shoulder is damaged. It seems I have torn tendons and will probably have to live with it. He could go in with a camera and try to find and repair the tears BUT it isn't something he thinks will work and will only do it if I insist. It seems those type of repairs after a replacement hardly ever work, and my down time would be a lot longer than 7 months... I started driving myself and went back to work way too soon plus overdid the therapy so I am stuck with being able to raise my arm 30 degrees straight up and to the side. The pain beyond that is worse than it was before. I feel a bit down right now and tend to cry some. Oh well! I guess things could be worse. It could have fallen off, and how would I shift the car?"; update of 12/05/08 - "I saw Dr. Wottowa (ortho surgeon) on Wednesday and after he saw the artho-gram I had done in November, he told me I have 2 torn tendons. On Jan 9 I will have ANOTHER surgery to try to repair them. He will use a camera first to check the muscles to see if they are still good enough to reattach the tendons and have them hold. It will out patient as the procedure isn't that invasive. I have no idea how long I will be down this time, but I'm sure it will require another round of physical therapy"; update of 03/09/09 - SEE: 03/11/09; update of 03/16/09 - SEE: 03/17/09; update of 03/20/09 - SEE:  03/22/09; update of 03/27/09 - SEE: 03/27/09; update of 04/22/09 - SEE: 04/22/09; update of 04/29/09 - SEE: 04/30/09

  Brenda Davis English ('64) of KS - request from her daughter, Debbie Reece, of 12/02/08 - "Mom has battled lung cancer and won, breast cancer surgery in November of last year, and we thought she was defeating it but now the cancer has decided to attack her spine.   She is still making herself get up and dressed every day, even if it is for an hour.  Looks forward to going for her radiation and chemo and still had 38 people here for Thanksgiving dinner although she did not stay up very long - she did get to see the food she had been preparing for a week gobbled up and many, many happy faces...out of 9 children in mom's family there are only 4 left.  We are the ones left to mourn while they are the ones to rejoice at the feet of the Father. With all that she has gone through she says she is in God's hands and when He decides to bring her home He will.  She has no fear of dying nor of the pain she has been having since the allergic reactions to morphine and codeine.  Hopefully, next week they will be zapping the nerves around her lower lumbar area to ease her pain.  Keep her in your prayers, please."

  Jimmy DeBerry ('64) of VA - stroke on 06/17/08; update of 06/25/08 - SEE: 06/26/08; update of 07/02/08 - SEE: 07/03/08; update of 07/26/08 - update of 11/27/08 - "... It's been a while since I have updated you on Jimmy.  I wanted you to know he has worked half days since September and yesterday was his last day at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.   He went back to work after his stroke to finish out his time until his retirement, and has retired after 41 years at the shipyard. He is doing well, but still has some weakness in his right hand and arm.  He truly is a miracle, because he has made a remarkable recovery. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed him and encouraged him and prayed for him.
Now that we are both retired and I have him with me 24/7, I am asking for your prayers for ME!!!!!! I am so thankful on this Thanksgiving Day for Jimmy's recovery.....and for his Typhoon family

  Jack Harty (Bushnell HS, IL - '66) of IL, brother of       Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC) - request of 11/06/08: Jack was diagnosed three weeks ago with malignant melanoma. In the surgery that followed, the doctors believed they were able to remove it all successfully, but because they delayed examining him for some time after he initially complained of the symptoms, they can't be certain, so another surgery will follow soon; update of 11/19/08 - during second surgery more tissue plus a lymph node were removed, and doctors are optimistic they caught it all;

President of the Class of 1952, Carl Jett of VA - brother of       Don Jett - NNHS / WHS - '60 of FL; husband of Sally Evens Jett - '52 - of VA - request of 02/10/09 - "My brother is in Roanoke Memorial Hospital ICU after an accident at his home in the mountains of Virginia near Buena Vista. He is recovering from broken ribs, broken collar bone and punctured lung, along with many cuts and bruises. I am in Virginia with him and his wife, and we ask for prayers for Carl's recovery. I will keep you updated on his progress. Thanks, Don"; update of 02/26/09 - "On Thursday, February 26th, my brother had his post accident appointment with the trauma team that treated him on February 5th after his horrible accident at his mountain home near Buena Vista, VA.  He got a good report with all injuries healing well and that really sparked his day.  He will continue to move slowly for many weeks ahead, but it looks as if his recovery will have him back to full speed before too long.  Your kind thoughts and prayers have meant so much to us and we know they were instrumental in his healing. Thanks so much and God Bless,

    Monty Phillips ('62) of VA - request of 02/28/09, 9:30 AM - "Monty was admitted to the hospital last night with a huge bleeding ulcer and in very poor condition. He is in ICU. He was scoped at midnight and surgery soon after to try and stop the bleeding. At 3:30 am, he was improved and fairly stable. This morning, he is not doing well. His BP is way too low. There seems to be something going on with the liver, but they will deal with that later." update of 02/28/09, 11:12 AM - "We just left Monty and he is heavily sedated and hooked up to a lot of tubes. He was unable to talk, but responded with head movement. I just reassured him that his dog is being cared for and his boss knows about his situation. He seems calm and improving. His color is much better - almost normal in the face..... updates of 03/01/09 - SEE: 03/01/09; update of 03/02/09 - SEE: 03/03/09; update of 03/05/09 - SEE: 03/06/09; update of 03/09/09 - SEE: 03/11/09; update of 03/14/09 - SEE: 03/16/09; update of 03/17/09 - SEE: 03/18/09; update of 03/20/09 - SEE:  03/22/09; update of 03/21/09 - SEE: 03/24/09; update of 03/30/09 - SEE: 04/01/09; update of 04/15/09 - SEE: 04/15/09; update of 04/18/09 - SEE: 04/19/09; update of 04/21/09 - SEE: 04/21/09; update of 04/22/09 - SEE: 04/22/09; update of 04/28/09 - SEE: 04/29/09; update of 04/30/09 - SEE: 04/30/09; update of 05/05/09 - SEE: 05/06/09; update of 05/20/09 - SEE: 05/20/09; update of 06/05/09 - SEE: 06/05/09; update of 06/21/09 - SEE: 06/22/09;

I talked with Myra about two hours ago, she is doing better and is expecting to go to a regular room later today and hopefully come home by Thursday (at the latest as she says).  The doctor doesn't seem to think that there is damage to the heart, but one artery was blocked 100% (they put 2 stints in), and there are two other arteries that are blocked 60% and 70%. Nothing will be done about those two yet; the doctor will wait and see how the first stints do..."

All of Us

You Light Up My Life

So many nights I'd sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now you've come along

And you light up my life
You give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my nights with song

Rollin' at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I'm turnin' for home?
Finally a chance to say "Hey, I love you"
Never again to be all alone

'cause you, you light up my life
You give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my nights with song

It can't be wrong
When it feels so right
'cause you...you light up my life
