11/16/05 - NNHS Newsletter - She Loves You

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I'm slowly figuring out what's wrong here.  Any novice could have determined that already, but to say that
I have a non-analytical mind doesn't really adequately describe the situation....

Anyway, you'll notice that the name of this link doesn't match the new name of the page. Think nothing of it.
It works.  I'll just use it while I keep thinking.

From Edna Whitcomb Harrison ('65) of VA - 11/15/05:

Carol,

I finally got the pictures from the reunion developed. I am presently out of town.

When I return I can scan the pictures and put them on a CD or I can put them on 3 1/2 inch disks. Which would be the best for you to deal with: a CD, 3 1/2 inch disks, or a set of pictures?

Edna

Oh, good!  By the time you get back in town, I'm confident I will have figured out what I'm doing wrong here!  GIGGLES!!!

Let me see, a CD, yes.  Or the pictures themselves.  Yes, probably.  Either one.  Yes.  Definitely.  But not the 3-1/2" disk.  Okay, fine!  That'll be great!  Thanks so much, Edna!

From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 11/15/05:

Carol --

I withdraw my request from a week or so ago for someone to look up the "Atlanta Lunch" in the 1951 City Directory. I was looking over the CRT pages again, and this time noticed that    Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA had already done so on 10/16/04.

The diner in question was located at 2413 1/2 Jefferson. Glad to know my memory hadn't failed, as I had remembered it being around 25th & J. Strange how your mind can remember such obscure things from so long ago. I've never been in that diner, but for some reason it stuck in my mind.

So, anyhooo, the photos of buses 91, 143, and 170 were taken at that location -- with the photographer probably standing on the SE (or SW) corner of 25th & J, shooting East.

The photo of #143 had been identified as being at the Shipyard's Main Gate. I lived just a block from the gate and knew that area like the back of my hand. The bus stop was on the South (West) side of Washington Avenue, where there were only the Shipyard's vehicle and man gates, and a rather tall (8-10 ft?) picket fence with iron stakes. There were no commercial buildings, like in this photo.

-- Ron

AHA!  Another mystery solved!!!  Thanks so much, Ronnie!  Not only that, but we now have the foundation for a new addition to Our Old Stomping Grounds - which I'll do shortly.....

I've only partially amended the CRT page so far, but it will all come together soon.

(I'm going to try something really radical here.  I'm going to try to insert an image here - you know, the way I used to do routinely......)

OH, MY GOODNESS!!!
I think it worked!

#143 in 1951 #91 in 1951

Here's a belated reply to a question by Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA in his 10/16/04 letter you have posted on the CRT pages.

Tom asked if the route sign on the front of bus #91 said "Colored". I'm fairly certain it said "Norfolk Ferry", which was one of the CRT routes, and which included Jefferson Avenue. At that time the ferry terminal was essentially at the foot of Jefferson, at the small boat harbor.

Tom wouldn't be likely to remember that route name, since it was discontinued in late '57 or early '58 with the opening of the Bridge-Tunnel. My guess is Tom was maybe 2 years old then?

-- Ron

No, probably not! GIGGLES!!!  Thanks again, Ron!  And speaking of CRT.....

From Daniel Frederick of DE - 11/15/05:

Thank you for the photos of the old Mack busses on your website. My father worked for Mack for many years, starting out in the bus division. It was nice to see what he worked on during his early years at Mack Trucks.

WOW!!!  I'm glad we could have provided that service to you, Daniel!  Thanks for letting us know!

From    Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 11/15/05 - "Catching Up":

I’ve just been catching up on email and newsletters and wanted to acknowledge a couple of entries in the Veterans' Day edition.

First,    Joan (Lauterbach Krause - '60 - of VA), and you too,    Carol ('65 - of NC)…..thanks for all the kind words about my dad (Nowell D. Nelms, M.D.). In my mind, he was one of a kind. He continued to make house calls well after most doctors had given that practice up. I can remember a few times when some patients couldn’t afford to pay their bills and he simply let it go (which drove my mother crazy). He also had the gentlest bed side manner I’ve ever seen.

Oh, my goodness!  There were two of them!  My daddy finally had to leave private practice and work at the Veterans' Administration Center at Kecoughtan so he could pull a salary because he kept refusing to charge his patients - or collect from those he had once charged.  I never knew that about your father, because he always treated Mama and me for free anyway - something about professional courtesy to a fellow physician's family.  We tried not to abuse the privilege by only visiting when it was necessary.  And Daddy had made us practically sign a blood oath never to call a physician at home unless it was a life threatening emergency.  But even as a kid I knew what a good doctor - and good man - he was.  It was patently obvious.

Next,    Dave (Spriggs - '64 - of VA), I think I already thanked you for the Marine Corps web site, but thanks again. And thank you,     Joe (Madagan - '57 - of FL).

http://www.marines.com/page/usmc.jsp

Isn't that marvelous?!?  I'll thank you again for that myself, Captain!

Finally,   Jean Poole ('64) wanted to wake up looking like Diane (Pritchett - '64). Diane wanted to wake up looking like    Annette (Rouse - '64). I wanted to wake up looking at all three of you. WOWZERONI !!!! The Devil made me do it.

Chandler Nelms

Chandler Darlin', you're an absolute hoot!  Thanks so much!

  From Me ('65) of NC - 11/16/05:

I thought it might be nice while I was going nutsy trying to think (as you know, that is totally against my
principles) if I did something other than throw things in frustration.  So I did this:

From Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA - 11/16/05:

Hello stranger,

Sometimes I really read your newsletter, and tonight I was taking a look at pictures from the class of '51 reunion. Swanson ('50) and Bobby ('51) Hornsby are my first cousins. Their mother and my father were brother and sister. Bobby, of course, passed away some years ago. Small world, isn't it. There are so many of us who are "Newport born and Newport bred."

You continue to do a great job with the website. You've managed to bring together many "reunions," and you've made a lot people happy. Old friends have gotten together, and it would have never happened were it not for you. You should be proud of what you've done

...I know you have made me proud of you! :)

                                                                        Jimmy

   Hi, Jimmy-Jimmy!

You only read the Newsletter "sometimes"?!?   I'm crushed!  WILD GIGGLES!!!

The intertwining is downright spooky, isn't it?!?  I love it!

It makes me very happy to hear that you're proud of me!  You, of course, were the very first person with whom I reconnected - on New Years Eve, 1999.  Let's see, I was wearing my royal purple bulky knit sweater, and my mama's long silver necklace, and ......WILDER GIGGLES!!!!

Thank you, Sweetie! It's always a delight to hear from you!

I'm eliminating so many possible causes of my current computer woes, than a real solution should present
itself by tomorrow.  Then I'll tackle that backlog of goodies I've been too frustrated to address for the last
couple of days.  Keep the faith.

Y'all take care of each other!  TYPHOONS FOREVER!

                          Love to all, Carol

She Loves You

- John Lennon

(The Beatles)

She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh,
She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh.
You think you lost your love,
Well I saw her yesterday - yi - yay.
She sats she loves you,
And you know that can’t be bad,
Yes, she loves you,
And you know you should be glad.
She said you hurt her so,
She almost lost her mind,
And now she says she knows,
You’re not the hurting kind.
She says she loves you,
And you know that can’t be bad,
She says she loves you,
And you know you should be glad.
She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh,
She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh.
And with a love like that,
You know you should be glad.
You know it’s up to you,
I think it’s only fair,
Pride can hurt you too,
Apologize to her.
Because she loves,
And you know that can’t be bad,
Yes, she loves you,
And you know you should be glad.
She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh,
She loves you yeh, yeh, yeh.
With a love like that,
You know you should be glad.
With a love like that,
You know you should be glad.
With a love like that,
You know you should be glad.
Yeh, yeh, yeh,
Yeh, yeh, yeh.
