Benton, 44, a North Carolina native, died Saturday, Oct. 10.

Mr.
Benton was a chartered life underwriter for Swanson-Hornsby John Hancock Insurance Co. He was past president of the Peninsula Life Underwriters Association.

He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Jaycees.

Mr.
Benton was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he was deacon, Sunday school teacher and former chairman of the finance committee.

Survived by his wife, Dolores Rowe
Benton; a daughter, Wendi R. Benton of Newport News; a son, J. Scott Benton of Hampton; five sisters, Evelyn Behm of Trenton, Mich., Juanita Burris of San Jose, Calif., Grace Collins of Westville, Ill., Edna Jackson of Newport News and Wilma Timinski of Ashland; and two brothers, Julius Benton Jr. of Bena and Tony Benton
of Hampton.

Visitation from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church by Dr. David H. Goodroe. Burial in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Memorials to Debt Reduction Fund of Temple Baptist Church, 235 Harpersville Road, Newport News 23601.

James Andrew Hall, 48, a native of Newport News and a lifelong Peninsula resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 10.

Mr.
Hall was an accountant for the certified public accounting firm of H. Russell Weaver in Newport News. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newport News.

Survived by two sisters, Nancy H. Gause and Lou Murray of Newport News.

Graveside service at 2 p.m. today at Collierstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Collierstown.

Edith Hallett Willett, 48, a native of Portsmouth and a Peninsula resident for 40 years, died Friday, April 16.

Mrs.
Willett was a bookkeeper for Willett's Construction, Inc.

Survived by her husband, Edward
Willett; a daughter, Jenny Wilson of Hampton; a son, Michael Willett
of Columbus, Ohio; her mother, Sarah Lee Midgett of Hampton; two sisters, Margaret Ray and Sylvia Brown of Hampton; and two grandchildren.

Visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel by the Rev. C.R. Creed. Burial in Parklawn Memorial Park. Visitation following funeral at 107 Walnut Street.

WILLIAM "BILL" MANNING

NEWPORT NEWS -
William Joseph "Bill" Manning Sr., 53, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center. Bill was a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., and was a Peninsula resident for 50 years. He retired Aug. 1, 1998, from the Newport News Fire Department as a shop supervisor with 30 years of service. Bill was a member of Denbigh Baptist Church and was active in the church youth program.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Judy
Manning; one son, Bill Manning Jr.; one daughter, Jennifer Manning
; one sister and her husband, Janice and Phillip Rowe; and one nephew, Gary Rowe, all of Newport News.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Denbigh Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Arnold, pastor, Denbigh Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. Bob Mosely, youth pastor, Denbigh Baptist Church. Interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park will full fire department honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Bethel, P.O. Box 390, Wise, Va. 24293; or Denbigh Baptist Church, Attention Mission Board, 13010 Mitchell Point Road, Newport News, Va. 23602.

I have been in touch with Billy Rhodes' mom this evening. Billy had a heart attack while driving. It was his third attack in two years. Last year he had a heart attack also while driving.

Billy had been teaching in Mexico.
